Eugene W. Hammill, age 82, of Cokato, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at the Lakeside Care Center in Dassel.
He was born Oct. 18, 1925, in Duluth, the son of Lloyd and Lillian Hammill. Eugene grew up in an orphanage until the age of 12, when he was placed in foster care.
At the age of 18, he joined the US Navy, serving his country for many years.
Eugene was united in marriage to Joann. They had two children, Valarie and Terry. He was later united in marriage to Betty, and they had a son, Jeffrey.
Eugene was united in marriage to Annie Margaret (Petersen) Mattson Aug. 20, 1988, in Crystal. They made their home in Dassel, Eden Valley, and Cokato, moving to Cokato in 2002.
Eugene was a talented woodworker, spending many hours in his shop dreaming up and creating projects. He had been a Boy Scout leader, taking a group of young Boy Scouts to the National Jamboree in New Mexico. He was also incredible on roller skates, having skated in many competitions during his lifetime.
Eugene could often be found casting a line in the closest lake he could find.
He is survived by his children, Valarie and Terry; grandchildren Amanda Thiese and Matthew Eide; and cousins.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Jeffrey.
A memorial service took place Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 1:30 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel with the Rev. Steven Olson officiating. There was a one hour time to gather with family prior to the service at the funeral home.
The Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel handled the arrangements.
