Mae Ordella Holmquist, age 89, of the Lake Jennie area in Dassel, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at the Lakeside Health Care Center of Dassel.
She was born May 8, 1919, in Hawley, Minn., the daughter of Herman and Clara (Nelson) Anderson.Mae grew up in Hawley, where she was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith.
She graduated from Hawley High School in 1936, and later graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., in 1941.
Mae worked for many years as a social worker. She was employed by Hennepin County from 1945 until 1952, as a Lutheran Welfare worker from 1952 to 1954, and for Meeker County Welfare from 1968 to 1969. She had also been employed as a teacher and teacher’s aid at the Hutchinson Vocational Technical School, and had worked as a home economics teacher at the Comfrey Public School.
Mae was united in marriage to Norman Holmquist June 5, 1954, at the Solem Lutheran Church in Hawley. They made their home on the Holmquist farmstead, where they raised their two children.
Mae loved to spend time in her garden taking care of the flowers and vegetables. She enjoyed reading and conversing with family and friends and was active in the Evangelical Covenant Church women’s group, serving the church in many fashions. She enjoyed the yearly Evangelical Covenant Church women’s Bible retreat.
Mae is survived by her husband, Norman Holmquist of Dassel; son John (Lisa) Holmquist of Dassel; and daughter Cindy (Russ) Hall of Duluth.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
The funeral service took place Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 1:30 p.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Dassel with visitation for one hour prior to the service at the church. The Rev. Keith Carlson officiated, and interment was at the Lake Jennie Covenant Cemetery.
Arrangements were by the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel.
