LaVerna Horsch

LaVerna Elma Horsch, age 72, of Howard Lake, died Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.

She was born June 20, 1935, in Stewart, Minn., the daughter of Otto and Dora (Bormann) Knaak. LaVerna was baptized June 20, 1935, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stewart by the Rev. C. H. Kowalske, and confirmed in her faith at the same church July 4, 1948, by the Rev. M. Schulz.

LaVerna was united in marriage to Jerome Horsch at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church by Rev. Schulz. Their marriage was blessed with six children.

They made their home in Howard Lake, where LaVerna joined Jerome as a member of St. James Lutheran Church, and served as a Lutheran Women’s Missionary League member and Sunday school teacher.

LaVerna was a busy homemaker. As her children grew, she became employed at CTS (Fabri-tek) in Cokato.

More recently, she enjoyed being a foster grandparent for students in the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted School District, where she was affectionately known as Grandma LaVerna.

Summers were busy with the Late-Risers Camping Club, where she visited with fellow campers throughout the year and participated in many camping events.

LaVerna was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome; parents, Otto and Dora Knaak; father- and mother-in-law Arthur and Elsie Horsch; son Alan; son-in-law James Salden; and brother-in-law Virgil Horsch.

She is survived by her children: Kathy (Roger) Schiroo, Randy Horsch, Roxanne Salden (special friend Wayne Schmitz) Cindy (Rick) Olson, and Christopher (Stacy) Horsch; daughter-in-law Karen Horsch; three brothers, Otto (Judy) Knaak, Alvin (Irene) Knaak, and Elroy (Betty) Knaak; brother-in-law Orville (Carol) Horsch; 10 grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and a host of family and friends.

The funeral service took place Monday, April 7 at 9 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake, with the Revs. Michael Nirva and Martin Schoenfeld officiating. The organist was Nancy Butterfass, and special music was provided by the LWML Women’s Choir and soloist Marienne Krietlow. Interment was at St. James Cemetery on Dutch Lake.

Visitation was Sunday, April 6 from 1 to 4 p.m. at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake, with a prayer service at 3 p.m., and continued Monday for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.

Pallbearers were Randy Horsch, Christopher Horsch, Jason Schiroo, Joshua Salden, Dustin Salden, Nicholas Olson, and Ryan Olson. Honorary pallbearers were Jennifer Schiroo, Sarah Deckert, Leah Deckert, Matthew Horsch, and Gabryella Horsch.

Arrangements were by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Howard Lake.
