Robert A. Johnson, age 83, of Watertown, died Sunday, May 18, 2008, at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.
He was born Oct. 27, 1924, in Watertown, the son of John V. and Thelia (Akins) Johnson. Robert was baptized Nov. 23, 1924, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Watertown by the Rev. E. N. Hedin, and confirmed June 25, 1939, at the same church by the Rev. E. H. Baker.
Robert was united in marriage to Harriet E. Hill May 19, 1948, at Zion Lutheran Church in Mayer by the Rev. Elmer Schwandt.
A loving husband, dad, and grandpa, Robert was a WW II veteran of the US Navy.
He was a graduate of Watertown High School and worked his whole career at the telephone company.
Robert was very active at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Watertown, serving on the school board, as an usher, an elder of the church, and president of the congregation.
Robert loved his garden, roses, vegetables, raspberries, and took great pride in his amaryllis, which he nurtured over winter. He enjoyed his daily walks for morning coffee, and was an avid bridge player.
Robert enjoyed his WW II trip to Washington D.C. He was a very devoted man to God, family, and country.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, John and Thelia Johnson; sisters Vernice (Gordon) West, and Elna (Valdemar) Xavier; brothers John and Earl Johnson; father-in-law and mother-in-law John and Louise Hill; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Lorraine (Jack) Arvidson, Helen Stahlke, and Earl Gatz.
Robert is survived by his loving family; wife Harriet; children and spouses Janet and Mark Bender of Watertown, David and Julie Johnson of Elk River, and Paul and Renae Johnson of Waconia; granddaughters Holly and Sarah Johnson; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Evelyn Johnson of Watertown, Lois Gatz of Waconia, and Larry Stahlke of Waconia; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral service took place Friday May 23 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Watertown with the Rev. Paul Krentz officiating. Interment was at Watertown Public Cemetery in Watertown with the Watertown American Legion providing military graveside services.
Visitation was Thursday, May 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Watertown, and continued Friday for one hour prior to the funeral service.
Casket bearers were Steve Gatz, Barry LaBounty, Stuart Stahlke, Harry Mueller, Dan West, Mark Johnson, and Joel Xavier.
