Mildred M. Kusserow

Mildred M. Kusserow, age 95, of Cologne, passed away peacefully with her daughter at her side Sunday April 20, 2008, at the Elim Home of Watertown.

She was born June 8, 1912, in Benton Township, Cologne, the daughter of Ernst and Mary (Born) Kassen. Mildred was baptized June 23, 1912, at Zion Lutheran Church in Benton Twp., Cologne by the Rev. August Rehwaldt, and confirmed March 26, 1926, at the same church by the Rev. Herman AmEnd.

Mildred attended the local schools and lived her whole life in the area.

She was united in marriage to Ernest C. Kusserow June 24, 1930, at Zion Lutheran Church, Benton Twp., Cologne by Rev. AmEnd.

Ernest died after a heart attack July 26, 1960. Mildred lived on the farm until 1963, when she sold the farm and built a house in Cologne, where she resided for 40 years. She then resided at Westview Acres in Waconia, and Elim Home in Watertown.

Mildred was employed at Tonka Toys for 15 years,

A loving wife, mom, grandma, and great grandma, she loved to sew, quilt, and do craft work, and enjoyed playing cards.

She was a very dedicated Christian and was a life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church, Benton Twp., Cologne, where she was a member of the ladies aid.

In addition to her husband, Ernest, Mildred was preceded in death by daughters Marcy Herrmann, and Bev Hamm; great-grandson Brandon Walden; father and mother Ernst and Mary Kassen; brothers Vernon, Willard, and Edwin Kassen; sisters Ruth Kassen and Lyla Kassen; sister-in-law Esther Kassen; and brother-in-law Wilbur Manteuffel.

She is survived by her loving family; daughter Susan Braun of Fullerton, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law Tom and Mary Lou Kusserow of Tempe, Ariz.; sons-in-law Donald Herrmann of Waconia, and Don Hamm of Rogers; grandchildren Cathy Walden of Shakopee, Lois and Tim Geyen of Watertown, Terry Hamm of Chanhassen, Scott Hamm of Brainerd, Ben Kusserow of West Jordan, Utah, and Justin and Jessica Kusserow of Chicago, Ill.; and great-grandchildren Ryan, Brent, Sarah, Tyler, and Megan.

Mildred is further survived by sisters Mabel Schwartz of Minneapolis, and Luola Manteuffel of Moundsview; brothers and sisters-in-law Orville and Elizabeth Kassen of Sandstone, and Myron and Audrey Kassen of Lake Crystal; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Janice Kassen of Red Wing, and Eleanor and Jerry Barnes of Columbus, Neb.; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends;

The funeral service took place Thursday April 24 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Benton Twp. Cologne, with the Rev. Eric Zacharias officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Casket bearers were Mildred’s grandsons and great-grandsons: Scott Hamm, Ben Kusserow, Justin Kusserow, Tyler Geyen, Ryan Walden, and Brent Walden.

Arrangements were handled by the Johnson Funeral Home of Waconia.
