Myron “Mike” J. Laurel, age 96, of Watertown, died Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at the Elim Home in Watertown.
Mike lived an abundant life; loved dearly by his family who he was always willing to help and advise.
He enjoyed his career with Cargill, where he worked for 47 years. Most of those years were spent as a grain trader on the floor of the Minneapolis grain exchange where, after retirement, he continued for several years as an active member and trader.
Mike enjoyed always having projects to work on; the biggest project being the cabin in the north woods that he designed and built himself and added on to as the family grew.
He had a sense of adventure, competing in ski jumping and slalom racing in his younger years. His love of skiing continued into his 70s as he guided his children, and then young grandchildren, down the mountains of Colorado.
He and his wife, Marian bought a farm in 1977, near Norwood Young America, after his retirement. He planted a garden every year, and kept busy with building projects and landscaping.
Mike was an avid reader of current events, Civil War stories, and biographies of our founding fathers.
In 1986, he and Marian moved to a house they had built in Watertown, where Mike resided until April of 2008. He had been very active in the Twin Cities West community with the YMCA, as a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and the Watertown Lions Club.
Mike led by example and his guidance and creative problem solving, his wonderful stories, and his subtle sense of humor will be missed. The world has lost a good and faithful servant.
Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Marian; parents Claude and Martha Laurel; and brother Ralph Laurel.
He is survived by his loving family: sons and daughters-in-law Jim and Sharon Laurel of Anacortes, Wash., and Jeff and Jan Laurel of Hamburg; daughter and son-in-law Linda and John Andrews of Cincinnati, Ohio; great-grandchildren Sam, Kelsie, Madeleine, Michaela, and Jason; a sister, Lucille Olson of Minnetonka; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral service was Sunday April 27 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Watertown with the Rev. Elizabeth Johnson officiating. Interment was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Mike’s grandchildren: Chris Laurel, Ben Laurel and Louise Copeman, Anne Andrews, Jane Andrews, Jeff Andrews, Kelly and Jason Larson, Brian Laurel, and Michael Laurel.
