Paul Edward Maiers, age 87, of Stewart, died Sunday, June 22, 2008, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
He was born July 18, 1920, in Collins Township, McLeod County, the son of Henry J. and Grace (McGraw) Maiers. Paul was baptized and confirmed at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Stewart.
Paul grew up in rural Stewart, and attended St. Boniface Catholic School.
He served his country in the US Army for four years during World War II, and was discharged in 1946.
Paul was united in marriage to Margaret Forcier Feb. 27, 1946, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Stewart. They made their home in Round Grove Township, where they raised their family.
Paul was engaged in farming all his life. He was a dairy farmer and a district seed manager, and was involved in the National Farmers Organization, where he served as president.
A lifelong and active member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Paul served as a trustee for 35 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and earned the distinction of fourth degree and had served as a grand knight.
Very community minded, Paul was a charter member of the Stewart Lions Club, having served as their president; a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 125, also having served as its president. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans, and served on the McLeod County Draft Board, and the McLeod County Variance Board.
Paul enjoyed fishing, bowling, and hunting in his younger years, John Deere tractors, and visiting with people. He loved his wife and family.
Paul is survived by his wife, Margaret of Stewart; his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren: daughter Mary Funk (Bernard) of Cokato, Kevin and Diane Funk with Courtney, Catherine, Gabriella, Tyler, Jake, and Allison; Angela and John Olson with Abigail and Andrew, Jeffrey and Julie Funk with Kyle, and Ben Funk; son Tom Maiers (La Mae) of Stewart; Kimberly Maiers Shaw and John Shaw III, Nathan Maiers, Jon and Kate Maiers with Dylan, Alexandra, and Jack, and Matthew Maiers; son Peter Maiers (Brenda) of Hutchinson, Kelly and Jamie Krueger with McKenzie and Parker, Ginger and Craig Zieman, and Mindy and Joe Hortsch; daughter Paulette Conroy (Steve) of Monticello, Stephanie Conroy, Paul Conroy, Maria Conroy, and Brian Conroy; and daughter Nancy Kottke (Dwight) of Stewart, Jennifer and Mike Alberts, Dan and Sarah Kottke, and Brandon Kottke.
He is further survived by brothers and sisters: Virginia Weis, Stan Maiers, Therese Kuttner, Brennan Maiers OSB, Sister Gracemarie Maiers OSB, Maureen Rubischko, Pat Maiers, Allan Maiers, and Sister Gen Maiers OSB; and by many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Paul was preceded in death by his son, baby Kevin Maiers; his parents; and by his siblings, Daniel Maiers, Loy Maiers, Ray Maiers, Jack Maiers, Joe Maiers Sr., Mary Jean Maiers, and Brenda Maiers.
Mass of Christian Burial took place Thursday, June 26 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Stewart, with the Rev. Gerald S. Meidl officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Visitation was Wednesday, June 25 from 5 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Hughes Funeral Home in Stewart, and continued Thursday for one hour prior to the Mass at the church.
Arrangements were with the Hughes Funeral Home of Hector.
