Mae Lenore Nelson

Mae Lenore Nelson, age 85, of Hutchinson, formerly of Dassel, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

She was born May 14, 1922, in Dassel, the daughter of Victor and Esther (Settergren) Ostlund. Mae attended the Lake Jennie Covenant Church in her youth, and was baptized as an adult at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel.

She received her education in Dassel and was a graduate of the Dassel High School class of 1939. Mae continued her education by attending Teachers Training in Duluth, and then, St. Cloud State. After moving to Wayzata, Mae pursued another interest by attending cosmetology school in Minneapolis.

Mae was united in marriage to Warren N. Nelson Jan. 29, 1943, at her parents’ home in the Lake Jennie community. This marriage was blessed with two children, Audre and Lynn. During their 65 years of marriage, Mae and Warren resided in Dassel, Wayzata, and Hutchinson.

As a beautician, Mae held employment in the Minnetonka area, and later owned and operated Mae’s Golden Touch in Hutchinson for several years.

As a teacher Mae enjoyed the country school settings of Bear Lake and Lake Jennie schools. She taught for many years in the Darwin schools, and also in the Litchfield, Dassel, and Wayzata districts.

Mae was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Hutchinson. She was also a member of the Stitch and Chatter Sewing Club in the Dassel area. She enjoyed volunteering at the Hutchinson Community Hospital Thrift Shop, and she was an active participant in AL-Anon wherever they lived.

Mae’s passion was “working in the dirt” enlarging and making new flower gardens at each of their homes. In later years, her gardening was limited to pots on the deck that she could enjoy through the picture window.

Mae’s greatest love was having time with family, Her patience and positive attitude have long brought family members and friends to her side for advice or a fun time. Mae’s wonderful smile and loving hugs will be missed by all who knew her.

Mae is survived by her husband, Warren Nelson of Hutchinson; children, Audre and Robert Johnson of New Prague, and Lynn Nelson of Tioga, Texas; grandchildren, Rochelle and David Sorensen, Nicole and Bradley Schmitz, all of New Prague, Jake Nelson of Lewisville, Texas, and Bradley and Michelle Michaud of Tuttle, Okla.; and great-grandchildren, Krysta Sorensen, Lucas Sorensen, Matthew Schmitz, Emily Schmitz, Benjamin Schmitz, Megan Michaud, Jackson Johnson Nesmoe, Tyler Nesmoe, and Jace Nesmoe.

She is further survived by special niece, Maria Hanft of Minneapolis; a brother, James and Shirley Ostlund of Dassel; a sister, Margaret Johnson of Minneapolis; brothers-in-law Louis and LaVerne Nelson of Mound, and William Nelson of Orr, Minn.; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Mae was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Esther Ostlund; grandsons Chance Nelson and Jesse Johnson; brother Raymond Ostlund, and a brother in infancy; and a sister, Florence Jensen.

Funeral service took place Monday, March 17 at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Hutchinson with the Rev. Paulus Pilgrim officiating. Music was provided by organist Shirley Holtz, and soloist Bonnie Baumetz, who sang “On Eagle’s Wings.” Congregational hymns were “Amazing Grace,” “In The Garden,” and “The Love of God is Greater Far.” Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery.

Honorary casket bearers were Rochelle Sorensen, Nicole Schmitz, Krysta Sorensen, Matthew Schmitz, Emily Schmitz, Ben Schmitz, Jackson Johnson Nesmoe, Tyler Nesmoe, Jace Nesmoe, and Megan Michaud.

Casket bearers were Jake Nelson, David Sorensen, Bradley Schmitz, Lucas Sorensen, Bradley Michaud, Orin Ostlund, Brent Ostlund, Kevin Ostlund, Dale Johnson, and Lyle Johnson.
