Ellen Maria Rokala, age 91, of Kingston, died Monday, June 30, 2008, at the Buffalo Hospital.
The daughter of August and Anna Lehtinen, Ellen was born May 18, 1917, on the family farm in Kingston Township, Meeker County. She grew up in the Kingston area, where she was baptized and confirmed.
After graduating from Litchfield High School in 1936, Ellen later graduated from the St. Cloud Teachers College with an associates of arts degree in education. She was employed as a teacher in several rural schools, and completed her teaching career at the Kimball School District, having taught for 33 years.
Ellen was united in marriage to Oscar Urho Rokala June 22, 1942, at her parents’ residence. They made their home in the Kingston area, where they farmed and raised their children.
Ellen loved to spend time with family and friends, and had a wonderful sense of humor. She often could be found crocheting, sewing, reading, doing a crossword puzzle, or in her younger years, going for a hike.
She is survived by her children, Jeanette Hicks of Stillwater, Marjorie Rokala of Clarks Grove, and Philip and his wife, Shari, of Kingston; and by grandsons, Ross Rokala and Andrew Hicks.
Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar; grandson Matt Hicks; parents; and three brothers, Arvo, Arnie, and Tom Lehtinen.
The funeral service took place Saturday, July 5 at 2 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel. Interment was at the Apostolic Lutheran Church Cemetery in Kingston.
Visitation was Friday, July 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel.
