Hilary W. “Woody” Schermann, age 75, of Baxter, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at the Silver Bay Veterans Home in Silver Bay.
He was born Feb. 16, 1933, in Winsted, to Paul and Cecelia (Ziebarth) Schermann.
Woody served in the US Army from 1953 to 1954, and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany).
Woody married Darlene Schultz Sept. 30, 1961, at the Little Brown Church in Iowa.
He was employed by the State of Minnesota in 1963, and worked as a conservation officer for the Department of Natural Resources, serving in many positions throughout the state during his 25-year career.
Woody was a member of the Minnesota Conservation Officers Association and the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association. After much research, he wrote a book that documented the history and role of the Minnesota conservation officer.
Woody also hosted a local radio program where listeners could call in questions concering conservation issues.
He loved to travel and was known for his infectious laugh and sense of humor.
