Delores Ida Martha Schmidt Obituary – 02/29/08


Delores Ida Martha Schmidt, age 93, of Darwin, died Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at the Hutchinson Community Hospital.

She was born Aug. 4, 1914, in Ellsworth Township, Meeker County, the daughter of Paul and Lillie (Lewerenz) Miller. Delores was baptized as an infant Sept. 13, 1914, at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Ellsworth Township by the Rev. Martin Schuetze, and confirmed in her faith as a youth in Litchfield.

She attended country school in Ellsworth Township.

Delores was united in marriage to Carl John Schmidt June 12, 1937, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church parsonage in Ellsworth Township by Rev. Schuetze. This marriage was blessed with three children.

Delores and Carl resided and farmed in Ellsworth Township. They shared 63 years of marriage, until Carl passed away July 20, 2000.

Delores was a loving homemaker and mother. She and Carl joined Peace Lutheran Church in Hutchinson in 1948, where she remained a member at the time of her death.

Delores became a resident of Burns Manor Nursing Home in Hutchinson Dec. 23, 2004.

Delores enjoyed reading, gardening, listening to old time music, and socializing with her friends. She also enjoyed attending church services at Burns Manor Nursing Home when she was living there. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Darlene Piehl and her husband, Kenneth; Patricia Kohls and her husband, Walter, all of Hutchinson, and Loren Schmidt and his wife, Cyndy, of Darwin; grandchildren, Kevin Piehl and his wife, Berta; Cory Piehl and his wife, Dawn; Lisa Weir and her husband, Gregory; Lonnie Kohls and his wife, Cindy; Leah Kohls-McCoy, Joshua Schmidt and his special friend, Tina Kurtz; and Jason Schmidt and his special friend, Kim Bah; and great-grandchildren, Crystal Carlson and her husband, Robbie; Shane Piehl, Travis Piehl, Kelli Piehl, Nicholas Weir, Nathan Weir, Tina Peterson, and Hannah McCoy.

Delores is further survived by step-grandchildren Amanda Smith, Jacob Smith, and Brandon Litzau; great-great-grandson Jayce Carlson; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, Carl, Delores was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Lillie Miller; and brothers, Earl Miller and his wife, Edna; and Irie Miller and his wife, Isabelle.

Funeral services took place Thursday, March 6 at 2 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Hutchinson with the Revs. Eric Goodwin and Gerhard Bode officiating. Organist was Paul Otte. The soloist was Rev. Eric Goodwin, who sang “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace.” “On Eagle’s Wings” was the congregational hymn. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Casket bearers were Delores’ grandsons and godchild, Kevin Piehl, Cory Piehl, Lonnie Kohls, Joshua Schmidt, Jason Schmidt, and Ronnie Seefeldt.

Honorary casket bearers were Delores’ grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchild.

Arrangements were by the Hantge Funeral Chapel in Darwin.
