Lydia M. Schmidt Obituary – 03/31/08


Lydia M. Schmidt, age 92, of New Germany, died Monday, March 31, 2008, at the Elim Home in Watertown.

She was born March 21, 1916, in Waconia Twp., Carver County, the daughter of Henry and Lavina (Burandt) Burau. Lydia was baptized April 11, 1916, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waconia by the Rev. William Schneider, and confirmed March 30, 1930, by the same.

Lydia was united in marriage to Melvin C. Schmidt Nov. 22, 1939, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waconia by the Rev. William Schneider.

Lydia had a great passion for fishing, quilting, baking, gardening, and playing cards, especially sheephead and 65.

She thoroughly enjoyed being a member of the St. Mark Ladies Aid and serving as a cook at St. Mark Lutheran School.

One of her greatest pleasures was just visiting with people.

Lydia was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin; daughter Lynette Schmidt; great-granddaughter Jasmine Dammann; daughter-in-law Anita Schmidt; brothers and sisters-in-law Herbert and Violet Burau, Roy and Evelyn Burau, Clarence and Erna Burau, and Ruben Burau; sister Laura Burau; and brothers-in-law and sister-in-law Edgar and Fern Zellmann, and Bob Bennett.

She is survived by her loving family: children and spouses, James and Connie Schmidt of Watertown, Sharon and Lowell Wasser of Mayer, Linda Dammann of Hopkins, and Lowell Schmidt of Germany; grandchildren Todd and Monica Wasser, Scott Wasser, Danny and Bridget Schmidt, Peggy Speagel, Kreg and DeDe Schmidt, Kelly Dieltz, Kristie and Curt Serbus, Kory Schmidt, Andrea Dammann and Terry, and Heather and Aron Potter; and great-grandchildren Miki, Lindsey, Kacey, Travis, Chandler, Aaron, Kaley, Nicole, Tim, Kaytee, Anna, Ethan, Connor, Samantha, Michele, Sarah, Elaina, Bradon, Kiera and Lexie.

Lydia is further survived by sisters-in-law Winnie Burau of Plymouth, Lois Burau of Texas, Merva Bennett, Marion Bennyhoff, both of Alaska; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service was Friday, April 4 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany with the Rev. Allen Holthus officiating. Interment was at St. Mark Lutheran Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Loane Burau, Gary Burau, Harvey Burau, Grant Burau, Gerald Burau, and DeLoyd Burau.
