John Joseph Schmidt Obituary – 04/18/08

John Joseph Schmidt, age 87, of Montrose, died Friday, April 18, 2008, at St. Mary’s Senior Living Center in Winsted.

He was born March 24, 1921, to Arnold and Victoria (Lyrek) Schmidt in Montrose.

John was united in marriage to Catherine Anna Marketon Sept. 17, 1949, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Waverly. This began a 58-year partnership of farming in Woodland Township, south of Montrose.

John loved working, fixing, and farming; but the best part was that all were done with his wife by his side. They enjoyed dancing polkas and waltzes, playing the accordion and harmonica, trips to casinos, and games of cards and horseshoes. Occasionally, the work of farming was stopped in order to go fishing or maybe do a little hunting.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Victoria Schmidt; sisters and brothers-in-law Florence and Tony Florek, Lorraine and Russell Prather, and Catherine and Bill O’Donnell; and his nephew, Dennis Rasset.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine; children Melvin and Ellen Schmidt, Carol and Craig Wallin, James and Dawnette Schmidt, and Gary and Carol Schmidt; grandchildren Ryan and Rebecca Schmidt, Tom and Andrea Schmidt, John Schmidt, Chris Wallin, Lori Wallin, Danielle Schmidt, Timothy Chandler, Joshua Schmidt, Rachelle Schmidt, Davis Schmidt, Kyle Schmidt, and Casey Schmidt; brother Frank and Marilyn Schmidt; and sister Marie and Jay Rasset.

Mass of Christian Burial took place Wednesday, April 23 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary of Czestochowa Catholic Church in rural Delano. The Rev. Joseph Gallatin officiated at the Mass, with interment in the church cemetery.

Visitation was Tuesday afternoon, April 22 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Iten Funeral Home in Delano with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and continued Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, prior to leaving for Mass.

Casket bearers were Ryan Schmidt, Thomas Schmidt, John Schmidt, Christopher Wallin, Lori Wallin, Davis Schmidt, Tim Chandler, and Kyle Schmidt.

Arrangements were by the Iten Funeral Home in Delano.
