Nina Elizabeth Schmiesing Obituary – 03/27/08


Nina Elizabeth Schmiesing, age 88, formerly of Hanska, Minn., died Thursday, March 27, 2008, at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center.

She was born Sept. 30, 1919, to George and Petra (Nundahl) Sorheim, the ninth of 11 children. Nina was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Hanska.

After graduation from Hanska High School, Nina was united in marriage to Floyd Melbourne Schmiesing. They raised their family on their farmstead in Lake Hanska Township, and lived there until Floyd’s death in 1989.

Nina enjoyed gardening, sewing, and spending time with her family and friends. She was a life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hanska, where she was active in choir, Sunday school, missions, library, and ladies aid.

Nina is survived by her four daughters, Mary Beth Egesdal, Pamela Schultz and her husband, Robert of Rosemount, Priscilla London and her husband, Jeffrey of Golden Valley, and Debra Christenson and her husband, Paul of Omaha, Neb.; daughter-in-law Kerry Schmiesing of Dassel; 24 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, Floyd, Nina was preceded in death by her parents; 10 siblings; and four sons, Marcus, Timothy, Jon, and George.

Funeral service was Saturday, April 5 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Hanska with the Revs. Todd Nelsen and Robert K. Schultz officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Visitation was Friday, April 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm, and continued Saturday for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Arrangements were by Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm.
