Edgar William Ernest Senne Obituary – 04/08/08


Edgar William Ernest Senne, age 94, of Glencoe, formerly of Plato, died Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.

He was born Sept. 2, 1913, in Fairmont, the son of William and Lena (Gieseke) Senne Jr. Edgar was baptized Sept. 21, 1913, by the Rev. C. Kohlmargen at Immanuel Lutheran Church of West Rutland Township, and later confirmed in the faith at the same church, May 20, 1928, by the Rev. A. M. Beck.

Edgar served his country in the US Army from May 1942 to November 1945. He served during World War II in the European Campaign, primarily in the invasion and liberation of Italy. During his service he received five Overseas Service Bars, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Meritorious Unit Award.

Edgar was united in marriage to Ruth Ahrens April 20, 1947, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Estherville, Iowa by the Rev. K. H. Horn. The couple made their home in South Branch, Minn., where Edgar began farming. This union was blessed with four children, Arvin, Eunice, Barbara, and Lawrence.

In 1956, the family moved to a farm north of Plato.

Edgar was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Plato since 1956, where he was a member of its men’s club and the church council. He was also active in the Plato American Legion.

On Sept. 9, 1989, Edgar was united in marriage to Frieda Beneke at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Glencoe by the Rev. L. Lemke. The past four years, they have resided at Orchard Estates in Glencoe.

Edgar loved everything about farming, enjoyed fishing, and in the later years, enjoyed puzzles.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Ruth; grandson John; brothers Richard and Earl; and sisters Hazel and Margaret.

Edgar is survived by his wife, Frieda of Glencoe; children Arvin Senne (wife Linda) of Minnetrista, Eunice Peterson (husband Doug) of Gaylord, Barbara Diehn (husband David) of Arlington, and Lawrence Senne (wife Kim) of Hayward, Wis.; stepchildren Noel Beneke (wife Carolyn), and Bernie Beneke (wife Shirley); and grandchildren Charles Senne, Lisa Senne, Amanda Peterson, Patsy Waytashek (husband Marc), Scott Peterson, Steve Peterson, Sarah Manley (husband David), Paul Diehn (fiancée Erica), Michael Diehn (wife Jessica), Andrea Diehn, Cody Cury, and Josh Christensen.

He is further survived by great-grandchildren Cole and Haily Weber, Breein and Brennen Waytashek, and Collin and Jackson Manley; six step grandchildren; 17 step great-grandchildren; sisters Ruth Voelker of Fairmont, Una Anderson of Fairmont, and LaVonne Peters of Hankinson, N.D.; as well as other relatives and friends.

Funeral services took place Thursday, April 17 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato with the Rev. Bruce Laabs officiating. The organist was Cheryl Andrix. Hymns included “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” “Abide with Me,” and “Just as I Am.” Interment was in the church cemetery, with military honors provided by the Plato American Legion Post.

Serving as casket bearers were Charles Senne, Scott Peterson, Steve Peterson, Paul Diehn, Michael Diehn and David Manley.
