Waldo J. Stender, age 91, of Minnetonka, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.
He was born Dec. 4, 1916, in Waconia Township, Carver County, the son of Henry H. and Elsie (Fillbrandt) Stender. Waldo was baptized Dec. 24, 1916, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Norwood Young America by the Rev. August Baumhoefner, and confirmed April 27, 1930, at the same church by the Rev. M. J. Abraham.
Waldo was united in marriage to Pearl E. Schultz Oct. 27, 1946, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie by the Rev. Berthold Streufert.
A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Waldo always offered a smile and a joke to cheer up anyone who would listen. He found time to do the things that matter most, including spending time with his family and friends, his faith, baseball, music, and working with his hands.
Waldo was a farmer, and was also employed as assessor for Waconia Twp., and at Long Lake Tractor.
He loved baseball so much that he built a field and pitched for his team. When he retired from his baseball career, he found his love of the game again through watching his grandchildren play their sports.
Waldo also had a passion for music, and enjoyed playing his guitar.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Elsie Stender; brother Ralph Stender; father-in-law and mother-in-law Ewald and Minnie Schultz; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
He is survived by his loving family: wife Pearl; daughters Robin Stender and husband Terry Johnson of Shorewood, and Penny Stender and husband Dale Perau of Sargeant; and grandchildren Justin Tollefson and special friend Lindsey, Jessica Nelson and special friend Nate, Laura Nelson, Matt Perau, Scott Perau and special friend Tricia, Alyssa Perau, Chris Johnson and special friend Kelly, Matt Johnson and special friend Jen, and Jennifer and Brent Brussel.
Waldo is further survived by sisters-in-law Alice Lester of Lester Prairie, Eldoris Schultz of New Germany, and Iris Schultz of Lester Prairie; nieces; nephews; cousins; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral service was Thursday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Minnetonka with the Rev. David Buuck officiating. Interment was at St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in Lester Prairie.
Casket bearers were Justin Tollefson, Jessica Nelson, Laura Nelson, Dale Perau, Terry Johnson, and Richard Nelson.
Visitation was Wednesday, Feb. 6 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia, with a prayer service at 4 p.m., and continued Thursday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
Arrangements were by the Johnson Funeral Home of Waconia.
