Mae E. Stifter Obituary – 03/14/08


Mae E. Stifter, age 73, of rural Howard Lake, died Friday, March 14, 2008 at the Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina.

She was born Sept. 20, 1934, in Winsted, the daughter of George and Agnes Fasching Roufs.

Mae graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1952.  She later received an associate degree from the College of St. Benedict.

 Mae and Norbert G. Stifter were joined in holy marriage Aug. 22, 1959, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted.  God blessed their marriage with six children.

Mae and Norbert engaged in dairy farming in Victor Township, Wright County for many years and were longtime members of the American Jersey Cattle Club.  They were also charter members of DHIA Wright County.

Mae was a faithful, lifelong member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted.  She belonged to C.C.W., St. Anne’s Society, and Holy Family Council 204.  She was also a member of Legion Auxiliary 407, was very active in many Legion festivals, Winsted’s C&C, Winstock, Winsted Dairy Promotion, and with Community Ed.

Mae loved Winsted. She was a very social person and a loyal friend. Through the years, she was very active in her church and did lots of volunteering.  She received the Archbishop’s volunteer award and was a two-time Citizen of The Year recipient from Winsted’s C&C.

Mae is survived by her loving children: Matthew N. Stifter of Howard Lake and special friend Sheri Arneson, Thomas G. (Julie) Stifter of New Germany, David L. (Lisa) Stifter of Annandale, Daniel J. (Karen) Stifter of Aitkin, Louis P. (Lisa) Stifter of Stewart, and Sarah A. Stifter of St. Bonifacius; 13 grandchildren: Eric, Amanda and Rick Stifter; Jacob Stifter and fiancée Jessica Lusso, and Rachel Stifter; Nick and Kelli Stifter; Levi, Jennifer and Nathan Stifter; and Elijah, Josiah and Gabriel Stifter; a great-grandchild, Annabel Hanson; sisters Iona (Martin) Francis of San Leandro, Calif., Sr. Elizabeth Roufs, O.S.B. of St. Cloud, and Marietta Littfin of Chanhassan; brother Frank (Terry) Roufs of Winsted; sisters-in-law Rosina Suilmann, Marge Stifter, and Doloris Roufs; and many other relatives and friends. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norbert G. Stifter in 2001; her parents, George and Agnes Roufs; stepmother Ida Roufs; a brother, Cletus Roufs; parents-in-law Louis and Amanda Stifter; sisters-in-law Sr. Aletha Stifter, O.S.F., Sr. Lydie Stifter, Sr. Louis Stifter, C.S.C., Louise Loebertmann, and Helen C. Roufs; and brothers-in-law Louis Stifter, George Stifter, Ernest Stifter, Clarence Stifter, Ince Suilmann, L. Mark Littfin and Tony Loebertmann.

A  Mass of Christian Burial took place Monday, March 17 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted. Father William A. Sprigler was the celebrant ,and interment followed at Holy Trinity Cemetery.

Visitation was Sunday, March 16 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted.  A combined St. Anne’s Society and Holy Family Rosary was recited at 3:30 p.m., and parish prayers were at 6 p.m. 

Casket bearers were Eric, Rick, Jacob, Nick, and Levi Stifter, Julie McSweeney, Mary Roufs, and Jeanine Roufs.

The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted served the family.
