Bernice Dorothy Swanson Obituary – 08/06/08


Bernice Dorothy Swanson, age 90, of Glencoe, formerly of Dassel, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, at the Glencoe Long Term Care Center.

She was born July 19, 1918, in Collinwood Township, Meeker County, the daughter of John Albin and Hannah Josephine (Anderson) Nordberg.

Bernice grew up in the Collinwood area and graduated from the Dassel High School in 1936.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith, and was a member of the Lamson Evangelical Free Church of Dassel at the time of her death.

Bernice was united in marriage to Victor Swanson June 5, 1937. They made their home in Dassel. To this marriage, four children were born.

Bernice had been a truck driver for a local canning factory, and worked in manufacturing and retail. She had also worked at the Atlantic Mills retail store in Minneapolis, and was a store detective at the Powers department store in Minneapolis.

An accomplished singer, Bernice sung many solos and duets over her lifetime. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends, and will be deeply missed.

Bernice is survived by her children, Virgil Allen (Yvonne) Swanson of Texas, Nancy Koelln (fiancé Dave Alton) of Kimball, Margaret (Myron) Janke of Merrifield, Minn, and Thomas (Cloe) Swanson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 16 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mabel Johnson and Annie Bollman; two grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Gerald Koelln.

A memorial service took place Wednesday, Aug. 13 at 10 a.m. at the Lamson Evangelical Free Church in Dassel with Pastor Mike Newsom officiating. Interment of the urn was at the Pioneer Cemetery, rural Dassel.

A time to gather with family and friends took place at the church one hour prior to the service Wednesday.

The Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel handled the arrangements.
