Lorraine Irma Thulin, age 91, of Dassel (formerly of Litchfield), died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008, at the Lakeside Health Care Center of Dassel.
She was born Jan. 8, 1917, the oldest of six children born to Carl S. and Frances (Eidem) Nelson in Danielson Township, Meeker County.
In 1923, the Nelson family moved to Marysville, WA, where Lorraine graduated from Arlington High School in 1934.
Lorraine married Emmett Peterson July 16, 1936. They lived in Washington until Emmett’s death as a result of a shipyard accident in 1944.
Shortly after that, Lorraine (pregnant at the time with Larry) moved back to Minnesota with her two small children, LaRene (6) and Roland (3), and they lived with her parents on the farm. Lorraine helped her parents with the farm work for several years until she got a job as the city assessor in Litchfield and she and the children moved into town.
She was elected to the position of Meeker County Registrar of Deeds Nov. 4, 1958 Lorraine enjoyed her job with the county and met many wonderful people.
While a member of the Mission Covenant Church in Litchfield, Lorraine met Bert Thulin. They were married June 4, 1961, and had many happy years together at their home in Litchfield, and spending as much time as possible at their cabin northwest of Bemidji.
After Bert retired, they bought a motor home and lived in Arizona during the winter months. In addition, they traveled to California, Alaska, Canada, and Europe.
After Bert’s death, Lorraine sold their home in Litchfield and moved to the Lakeside Apartments in Dassel, where she lived for three years, before moving to Dassel Health Care Center in 2001.
Lorraine was a wonderful, generous woman and a gracious hostess. She loved to entertain and cook. Other hobbies included golfing, fishing, crocheting, and watching the Minnesota Twins.
She is survived by her children: daughter LaRene (Cliff) Johnson of Dassel, son Roland (Judy) Peterson of Shevlin; daughter-in-law LaDell Peterson of Pinewood; stepchildren Dena Waters of Minneapolis, Joyce (Cub) Holm of Arizona, and Bob (JoAnn) Thulin of Connecticut; eight grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 15 step great-grandchildren.
Lorraine is further survived by a sister, Dorothy Nelson of Roseville; brothers Carlton (Beth) Nelson of Bloomington, and LeRoy (Jeanne) Nelson of Bricelyn, MN; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Nelson of Indiana.
In addition to her husbands, Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Frances Nelson, a son, Larry Peterson; a step grandson, Robby Thulin; a sister, Rona Tipka; and a brother, Wayne Nelson.
The funeral service was Thursday, Nov. 20 at 1:30 p.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Dassel with the Rev. Keith Carlson officiating. Sheldon Hedin was the soloist, and Harvey Peterson was the organist. Interment was at the Ripley Cemetery in Litchfield.
Visitation also took place Thursday at the church for two hours prior to the service.
Casket bearers were Jerome Johnson, Tom Johnson, Greg Johnson, Paul Johnson, Jonathan Thulin, Cory Peterson, Emmett Peterson, Greg Dischinger, and Curt Dischinger.
The Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel handled the arrangements.
