Martha Evelyn Berg, age 93, of Annandale, formerly of Cokato, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at the Annandale Care Center.
She was born March 15, 1916, to Peter and Bertha (Nikkila) Hill at their farmhouse in rural Cokato. Martha was baptized and confirmed in the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church of Cokato.
She graduated from Cokato High School in 1936, and was employed as a clerk at Cokato Farmer’s Store and also at the canning factory in Cokato.
Martha began dating Vic Berg in 1930, when she was 14 and Vic was 15. After a long courtship, they were married April 24, 1941, at Mt Hermon Lutheran Church in Annandale.
They moved into their farmhouse by Maxim Lake in Albion Township in the fall of 1945. Vic farmed, and Martha was a full-time wife and mother. Vic preceded Martha in death Jan. 20, 1995.
Martha moved to the Cottages of Annandale in the fall of 1995, and into the Annandale Care Center in July of 2001.
A faithful member of Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church, Martha was active in the ladies groups, Sunday school program, and regularly brought flowers, especially gladiolas, from her garden for the church altar. Her gardens were always a source of great pleasure. She was an avid reader and helped start the church library.
Martha loved the challenge of crossword puzzles and enjoyed writing poetry to celebrate the special events of her family and friends. She became a grandmother in 1966, and began creating quilts her tally lists nearly 100!
Vic retired from the post office in 1980, and they did some traveling and enjoyed spending time with family. One of their favorite pastimes was playing the card game, “Garbage.”
Family was always important to Martha and Vic, and those gatherings always included a “little lunch.” Martha enjoyed sharing her delicious homemade bread, coconut meringue bars, banana bread, and rice pudding.
Martha is survived by her three children and their spouses, Dorine and Paul Johnson of Annandale, Bruce and Janet Berg of Alexandria, and Jean and David Borrell of Maple Lake; seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Trent) Ashwill, Mitchell (Lisa) Johnson, Derrick (Marnee) Johnson, Gerrit (Kim) Berg, Gaia (Ted) Buttweiler, and Peter and Paul Borrell; 10 great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Patrick Ashwill, Ryan, Ivy and Darby Johnson, Emily, Abigail and Haley Berg, and Aidan and Evan Buttweiler; also many nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to her husband, Martha was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Hanna and Esther; and brothers, Walter, Elmer, Roy, Reino, and Ernie.
The funeral service took place Saturday, March 21 at 3 p.m. at Mount Hermon Lutheran Church in Albion Township with the Rev. Marianne Zitzewitz officiating. Music was prvovided by Belinda Larson, Marlene Mohwinkel, and the Rev. Steve and Becky King. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Visitation was Friday, March 20 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home of Cokato, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
Casket bearers were Mitchell Johnson, Derrick Johnson, Peter Borrell, Paul Borrell, Trent Ashwill, and Ted Buttweiler. Honorary casket bearers were Jennifer Ashwill, Gaia Buttweiler, and Gerrit Berg.
Arrangements were by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Cokato.
