Donald Wayne Current (the Silver Fox), age 81, of Winthrop, MN, died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis due to post-surgical complications.
He was born Jan. 28, 1928, in Comfrey, MN, the son of Paul R. and Ada (Cunningham) Current. Don was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth, both at the United Church of Christ in Comfrey.
He was a graduate of the Comfrey High School.
Don served his country in the National Guard during the Korean War. He entered military service Jan. 16, 1951, and received his honorable discharge May 11, 1952. Don achieved the rank of sergeant first class.
He was united in marriage to Esther E. Zarn Aug. 16, 1953, at First Congregational Church in Comfrey. This marriage was blessed with two children. The couple shared 51 years of marriage before Esther passed away May 11, 2005.
The couple settled in Winthrop in October 1954.
Don was self-employed in financial services. He worked until he was 80, and believed it was his passion to help his friends and clients gain financial independence. His career was also awarded with Top Producer and Presidents Club awards for each company he worked for. Don was a true champion of his clients.
A member of Faith United Church in Winthrop, Don was the current chairman of the board. He was also a member of the Sibley Lodge 209 A.F.& A.M., Order of the Eastern Star, the Zuhruh Temple, and Hutchinson Saddle Club. He served on the Current Cemetery Board and was president of Griffin Investments.
Don enjoyed golfing, dancing, music, horses, investments, and cars. He especially loved the time he spent with his children and grandchildren.
Don is survived by his children, RoxAnne Carlson and her husband, Dale of Cokato, and Scott Current and his wife, Kim, of Chanhassen; grandchildren, Briah Carlson, and Ryan and Rachel Current; a sister, Myrne Holmen of Crosslake; a brother, Richard Current of Mounds View; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, Esther, Don was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Ada Current; a grandson, Austin Current; a brother, Lorin Current; and a brother-in-law, Arlen Holmen.
A celebration of Donald’s life took place Saturday, May 23 at 2 p.m. at Faith United Church in Winthrop, with interment at 10 a.m. in Current Cemetery, Home Township, Brown County, MN. Pastor Eric Haugan officiated at the service. Mary Louise Knutson was the pianist, and music selections were “How Great Thou Art,” “Amazing Grace,” “I Can Only Imagine,” and “When The Saints Go Marching On.”

Casket bearers were Don’s grandson, Ryan Current; nephews, Brian Current, Tim Current, and Dean Current; and friends, Jim Palm, Steve Bruns, and Eugene Zarn.
Memorials are preferred to The Shriner’s Childrens Hospital or Faith United Church.
