Elmer V. Dietel, 90

Elmer Victor Dietel, age 90, of Winsted, and formerly of Lester Prairie and Silver Lake, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, at the Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.

He was born Dec. 24, 1918, in rural Bertha, the son of John and Lucy (Hoof) Dietel. Elmer was baptized shortly after his birth at the Evangelical and Reformed Church of Bertha.

As a young child, Elmer’s family moved to Lester Prairie. Elmer attended District 5 country school.

He was confirmed in the faith at the United Church Of Christ in Lester Prairie by Rev. Becker.

Elmer was united in marriage with Cecelia Thomas Jan. 19, 1945, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Arlington by Rev. Bradtke. The couple made their home on a farm near Lester Prairie and later, a farm near Plato.

Elmer retired from farming and went to school to learn the trade of welding. He had worked for Glencoe Manufacturing, Schwartz Manufacturing, JR Clark, and Reg Hauslauden.

Over the years, Elmer had lived in Glencoe, Silver Lake, Sauk Center, Brownton, Lester Prairie, and most recently, Winsted.

Elmer was a faithful member of the Prairie Community Church, where he was a past council member.

He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, playing bingo, and listening to old-time music and church music. Elmer often attended the senior citizens events in Lester Prairie. He was a big Minnesota Twins fan and looked forward to attending games every year.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lucy; an infant daughter; wife Cecelia; son John; grandchild Mark Loebertmann; brothers Henry and Clarence; and sisters Linda Hoernemann and Irene Klaustermeier.

Elmer is survived by his children, Lucy Kielty (Chuck) of Waite Park, Roger Dietel (Sandy) of Arlington, Marian Musselman (Paul) of Hanover Park, IL, Gary Dietel (Carol) of Glencoe, Gwendolyn Ische (Ivan) of Arlington, Barbara Kern (Clifford) of Lester Prairie, Thomas Dietel of Gaylord, and Nicholas Dietel (Donna) of Winsted; 16 grandchildren, four step grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren.

He is further survived by sisters Leona Schultz of Glencoe, and Adella Rustad (Stanley) of Waconia; brother Raymond Dietel (Delores) of Lester Prairie; brother-in-law Lowell Thomas (Leona) of Clinton, MO; as well as other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services took place Wednesday Nov. 25 at 10 a.m. at the Prairie Community Church in Lester Prairie, with the Rev. William Baldwin officiating. The organist was Marie Eischens. Soloist Marvin Westermann sang “Amazing Grace.” The congregational hymns were “What a Friend We have in Jesus,” and “On Eagle’s Wings.” Interment was in the Peace Evangelical Cemetery of Bertha.

Visitation was Tuesday evening, Nov. 24 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Prairie Community Church, and continued Wednesday for one hour prior to the service.

Serving as casket bearers were Elmer’s grandchildren.
