Wanda B. Drumsta, 87

Wanda Bernadette Drumsta, age 87, of Delano, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth after a short illness.

She was born Feb. 14, 1922, in Munising, MI, to Alice and Lawrence Hebert. The family then moved to Detroit, MI in 1925, where Wanda graduated from Nativity Catholic School at the age of 16.

After graduation, Mary worked for Bell Telephone Company and held other jobs, as well.

She married James Mathis Oct. 30, 1941. James and Wanda had two children, Jim Mathis and Susan Mathis.

Wanda met her second husband, Henry “Hank” Drumsta, while working at National Machine Company in Utica, MI. They were wed Sept. 26, 1953, and had six children.

Wanda and Hank purchased the Hilltop Grocery from Wanda’s parents in 1957, and moved to Munising. They owned the store until 1971.

Wanda worked for the Alger County Commission on Aging from 1984 until her retirement in 2004. She worked with the senior dining program, Altran bus transportation, and Meals on Wheels while employed with the commission.

Her hobbies included card playing, reading, sewing, and craft projects. Wanda was a “social butterfly” and very much enjoyed spending time with friends and family.

She moved to Minnesota after retirement, in 2006.

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, James and Hank; two sons, Arthur and Michael; two sisters, Alice and Patsy; and a brother, Larry.

She is survived by six children, Jim (Charlotte) Mathis of St. Clair Shores, MI, Susan (Bob) Mathis Miller of Eagan, Cheryl Drumsta Milton of Sweet Springs, MO, David (Susan) Drumsta of Hermantown, MN, Jack Drumsta of Munising, MI, and Nancy (Thomas Huncha) Drumsta of Buffalo; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great, great-grandchild.

Wanda is further survived by sisters, Nancy Cook, Marilyn Hemoke, both of Munising, MI, and Emalee Dawson of Marquette, MI; a brother, Patrick Hebert of Detroit; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will take place Saturday, Dec. 5 at Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising, MI with visitation for two hours preceding the service. The service time and guestbook may be found at www.bowermanfuneralhome.net
