Stanley R. Ernst, 82

Stanley Ruben Ernst, age 82, of Lester Prairie, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, as the result of an accident.

He was born July 19, 1926, in Winsted, the son of Martin and Anna (Stender) Ernst. Stanley was baptized Aug. 8, 1926, and later confirmed in the faith March 17, 1940.

Stanley attended the Lester Prairie Public School. He drove milk truck after his time in school.

Stanley enlisted and entered active duty in the United States Army Nov. 22, 1945, receiving his honorable discharge Nov. 12, 1948, at Fort Bragg, NC.

He was united in marriage with Dorothy Schmidt Oct. 15, 1947, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie by the Rev. R.A. Ritz.

Stanley worked for Schwartz Manufacturing until the couple moved to Babbitt in 1956, and then Embarrass in 1961. He then worked as a welder for Reserve Mining Company, and did a little farming.

After retiring in 1983, Stanley and Dorothy moved to Lester Prairie, and spent winters in Arizona and Texas. They worked together at Carlson’s Apple Orchard and Young America Corporation. Stanley had also worked for Thalmann Seeds and Comminco.

Stanley was a member of the POLKA Club, VFW Post 906 in Hutchinson, the Lester Prairie American Legion, and the Good Samaritan Club. He was a current member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, and a former member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Babbitt.

He enjoyed polka dancing, spending time with family, traveling, being a snowbird in Arizona and Texas, fishing, gardening, camping, and walking. Stanley spent time woodworking and making various crafts, especially toy boxes for his grandchildren.

Stanley and Dorothy met at a dance in New Germany and have been dancing together ever since. They have been inseparable for 62 years.

Stanley was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Kent Kappes; and a sister, Evangeline Thiel.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ernst of Lester Prairie; children Gary Ernst (wife Denise) of Lester Prairie, Rick Ernst (wife Kris) of Exeland, WI, Joan Pince (husband Dan) of Superior, WI, Brian Ernst (wife Tammy) of Maiden, NC, and Deborah Arens (husband Alvin) of Dassel; grandchildren Brady Ernst (wife Andrea), Lee Kappes (fiancée Tianna Boettcher), Eric Kappes (friend Sheila Mengelkoch), Adam Kappes (friend Martina Boettcher), Zachary Ernst (friend Marie Linehan), Nick Thompson, Angela Mack (husband Eric), Bree Stone (husband Bill), Dana Veness, RaeLynn Arens, and Cecily Ernst; and great-grandchildren Layna Ernst, Hannah Stone, Kallee Stone, Blake Stone, Morgan Peterson, and Taylor Borg.

Stanley is further survived by a sister, Carol Bruckschen (husband Roland) of Lester Prairie; brother-in-law Roland Thiel of Lester Prairie; sister-in-law Evelyn Strei of Lester Prairie; as well as many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services took place Monday June 22 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie with the Rev. Eric Nelson officiating. The organist was Marsha Christenson. Congregational hymns were “The Lord Is My Shepherd,” “Abide With Me,” and “On Eagle’s Wings.” Interment, with military honors provided by the Lester Prairie American Legion and the Hutchinson VFW, took place at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Lester Prairie.

Stanley’s grandsons served as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers were Stanley’s granddaughters.
