Henry T. Ewers, age 83, of Alexandria, MN and DeLand, FL, formerly of Delano, died with his family by his side Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at the Florida Hospital DeLand.
He was born June 13, 1925, to Henry and Gladys (Carncross) Ewers in Lansford, ND.
Henry served in the Navy during World War II as a seaman first class. He was discharged with a Purple Heart June 15, 1945.
Henry was employed as a captain in the shipping industry and worked on the Great Lakes for more than 38 years.
He was preceded in death by his children, Janette Briggle, Gary Ewers, and Therisa Finneman; grandsons Mathew and Robert; parents Henry and Gladys Ewers; brothers Kenneth, Loren, Lorenz, Robert, and Murray; sisters Luella, Lorraine, and Juanita; and parents-in-law Julia and Julius Johnson.
Henry is survived by his wife, Donna; children Becky and Michael Lea, Rosalie Thompson, Martha and Rod Rasmusen, Deborah and Pete Smude, and Henry and Kathie Ewers; 28 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law Robert and Doris Johnson, and Vernon Johnson; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mass of Christian Burial took place Saturday, Jan. 31, at 11:30 a.m. at the St. Peter Catholic Church in Delano. The Rev. Timothy Cloutier officiated, with interment in the church cemetery. Military honors were provided by the Delano American Legion Post 377.
Visitation was Friday, Jan. 30 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Iten Funeral Home in Delano with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and continued Saturday for one hour prior to services at the church.
Casket bearers were Henry Ewers IV, Garrett Ewers, Catie McGuire, Daniel Bernard, Terry Finneman, Jeff Ahrens, Bryon Bromley, and Steven Ahrens.
Arrangements were by the Iten Funeral Home in Delano.
