Josephine A. Harling, 92

Josephine Antoinette Harling, age 92, of Dassel, formerly of Marble, MN, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at her Lakeside Apartment in Dassel, with family by her side.

Josephine was born May 5, 1917, in Marble, MN, the daughter of Dominic and Mary (Leone) Sarica. She grew up in Marble, where she attended the Olcott School and later attended Greenway High School, graduating in 1935.

Josephine was united in marriage to Richard James Harling Feb. 19, 1949. They made their home in Marble, in view of the home where she grew up.

A hard worker, Josephine worked at many grocery stores, hardware stores, the Herberger’s Department Store in Hibbing, and Fairway Foods, and helped at a family business, the Henny Penny Restaurant in Grand Rapids.

Josephine’s life was filled with the love of family and friends, and everything she did reflected this blessing.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Ladies VFW Auxiliary.

She loved to go antiquing and to garage sales with her brother-in law. Josephine was a good Italian cook, enjoyed crocheting baby blankets and sewing clothes for her grandchildren.

She took great pride in taking care of her home, mowing and weeding the lawn and moving snow until, at the age of 90, she decided that someone else could handle that job under her supervision.

At the age of 91, she moved to Dassel to be closer to her daughter.

Josephine was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; her parents; a great-grandson, Derek Dianoski; sisters Theresa (Joe) Altobell and Carmella (Mike) Lubovich; nephew Joseph Altobell Jr., William Meittunen, and special friend and brother-in-law, Robert Harling.

She is survived by her daughter, Judith Barbara (Jack) Haverkamp of Darwin; four grandchildren, Kathleen (Jerry) Maki, Lori (Scott) Stangland, Robert Pelkey, and Sandra (Dale) Dianoski; five great-grandchildren, Jerry (Jessica) Maki, Melissa (John) Borich, Richard (Mercedez) Stangland, JoDee (Sandro) Lopez, and Cassie Dianoski; and many friends and other relatives.

A Mass of Christian Burial took place Monday, Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Darwin with Father John Pearson officiating. A Rosary was said prior to the service at the church. Interment of the urn will be at the Lakeview Cemetery in Coleraine, MN at a later date.

Casket bearers were Richard Stangland, Scott Stangland, Robert Pelkey, Jerry Maki, Jerry Maki II, Dale Dianoski, John Borich, and Jeff Love.

Arrangements were handled by the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel.
