Doris Harthun, 94

Funeral services celebrating the life of Doris Martha Harthun, age 94, of Glencoe took place Saturday, Oct. 17 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie. Doris entered eternal rest Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.

Doris was born Feb. 20, 1915, the daughter of August and Martha (Benning) Schauer in Arlington. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith in 1915, and later confirmed, in 1929, by the Rev. Edward Menzel at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Villard, MN.

Doris graduated from Villard Public School June 1, 1934.

Her first job was at Krispy Kreme, and she also worked for the Chaska Telephone Company, Northwest Airlines, and retired from the US Postal Service.

Doris lived in numerous places including the areas of Chaska, Bloomington, and Prior Lake. After retiring, she traveled between Minnesota and Arizona until moving to Orchard Estates in Glencoe a few years ago, and later moving to Glencoe Long Term Care.

Doris enjoyed her vegetable gardens and each year her garden would grow – even at Long Term Care, she participated in the growing of vegetables in the gardens. She also enjoyed fishing, having grown up on a resort.

Doris loved to sew, crochet, play cards, especially canasta; and she loved watching baseball games. One of her greatest joys was to spend time with her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Earl Thurk, Herman Harthun, and Art Rothe; daughter Jeanette Stenstrum; brothers Alfred and Elmer; and a sister, Eleanor Hastings (Ross).

Doris is survived by her children, Marlene Rademacher (Gilbert) of Cologne, Roland Thurk (Carol) of Chanhassen, Lee Harthun (Cheryl) of Silverthorrne, CO, and Debbie Pafko (John) of Lester Prairie; her grandchildren, Carol, Stephen, Robert, Susan, Diane, RoseMarie, Debra, Leon, Charles, Jonathan, JoAnne, Christopher, Dona, Roland Jr., Joseph, Matthew, Timothy, Christinia, and Gregory; 34 great-grandchildren; seven great, great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Cora Goebel, and Helene Schauer; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Officiating at the 11 a.m. funeral service was the Rev. Eric Nelson. The organist was Marsha Christenson. Soloist Chuck Thiel sang “Beautiful Savior.” Congregational hymns included “It is Well with My Soul,” “On Eagle’s Wings,” and “My Faith Looks Up to Thee.” Interment was in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Visitation took place Friday evening, Oct. 17, and continued Saturday prior to the funeral service.

Doris’ grandchildren served as casket bearers.
