Roland H. Hayes, age 87, of Montrose, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, at the Elim Home in Watertown.
He was born Nov. 19, 1921, to John and Freda (Klemm) Hayes in Montrose.
Roland was united in marriage to Gladys A. Huncha Nov. 16, 1955, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Delano.
He was employed as a Minnesota DHIA supervisor for Wright County for 36 years, and served on the Montrose Fire Department for 25 years.
Roland was an avid butternut hunter and ice fisherman. He enjoyed following the Minnesota Twins, whether it was watching or listening to the game, or looking at the box scores. He was known to always have Doublemint gum ready to share.
Roland was preceded in death by his parents, John and Freda Hayes; sister Harriet Crawford; brother Leland Hayes; infant brother Orland; and brothers-in-law Ambrose “Rastus” Huncha, Edmund Hahnke, George Varner and Durand Crawford.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys; son Stephen; daughter Judy and Dale Paumen; sister Mianna Varner; and sisters-in-law Martha Hayes, Betty Huncha, Catherine “Toots” Hahnke; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The funeral service took place Friday, Feb. 27 at 10:30 a.m. at the Iten Funeral Chapel in Delano. The Rev. Jeffrey Olson officiated. Interment was at St. Joseph Cemetery in Delano.
Visitation was Thursday evening, Feb. 26 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Iten Funeral Chapel, and continued Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., prior to the service.
Casket bearers were Joey Hahnke, Tom Huncha, Mike Huncha, Gaylen Hayes, Donald Cardinal, and Duane “Otie” Otness.
Arrangements were by the Iten Funeral Home in Delano.
