Emelyn Beatrice Isaacson, age 88, of Dassel, died Thursday, July 16, 2009, at the Hutchinson Community Hospital.
She was born Jan. 26, 1921, in Litchfield, the daughter of Dewey and Dora (Bryneston) Klimstra. Emelyn grew up north of Dassel, in the Swan Lake Church area. She was baptized at the Presbyterian Church in Litchfield, and later confirmed at the First Lutheran Church (Gethsemane) in Dassel.
Emelyn attended the Maynard Lake Country School District 30, and graduated from the Dassel High School in 1938.
She was a member of Swan Lake Lutheran Church until she was united in marriage to Willard Isaacson, Aug. 16, 1941, in a double wedding with her twin sister, Evelyn.
She and Willard made their home in Dassel, and Emelyn became a member of the Gethsemane Lutheran Church.
Emelyn worked at the Isaacson Grocery Store for over 20 years. She also helped cater weddings and anniversaries with Lucille Anderson and Mary Ellen Nelson for many years.
As an active member of her church, she served in various capacities, including Sunday school teacher for over 25 years. She also taught religious instruction for 13 years, and was a member of the Altar Guild, Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA), and other committees.
Emelyn was also an active member of the Paul F. Dille American Legion Auxiliary for over 25 years, and had been in charge of the poppy program. She also helped with bingo at the Dassel Lakeside Nursing Home for a number of years, and participated in softball, bowling, horseshoes, and enjoyed going for walks.
Emelyn is survived by her daughter, Diane (Mick) Helmbrecht of Hutchinson; son, Duane (Linda) Isaacson of Dassel; five grandchildren, Suzanne (Chris) Braun, Scott (Rhonda) Helmbrecht, Jon (Michelle) Helmbrecht, Jason Isaacson, and Jennifer (Scott) Anderson; 12 great-grandchildren; and by her twin sister, Evelyn (Linton) Isaacson of Dassel.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard, March 25, 1978; her parents; and a sister, Luella Nass.
The funeral service was Tuesday, July 21 at 11 a.m. at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel with the Rev. Steven Olson officiating. A piano instrumental was performed by Jennifer Anderson. Hymns were “Lift High the Cross” and “On Our Way Rejoicing.” Soloist Jon Benson sang “The King is Coming” and “The Lord’s Prayer.” Organist/accompanist was Florine Osness. Interment followed at the Dassel Community Cemetery.
Visitation was Monday, July 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel, and continued Tuesday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Casket bearers were Suzanne Braun, Scott Helmbrecht, Jon Helmbrecht, Jason Isaacson, Jennifer Anderson, and Karna Humphrey.
The Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel handled the arrangements.
