Irene Ruth Burkstrand Johnson, age 94, of Cokato, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at her home.
A memorial service will take place Friday, Jan. 30 at 1:30 p.m. at Stockholm Lutheran Church in Cokato, with visitation for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Memorials are preferred to Stockholm Lutheran Church, Crossroads Animal Shelter in Hutchinson, and ConnectCare Hospice.
Arrangements are with the Swanson Peterson Funeral Home in Cokato.
Irene was born July 21, 1914, at Rice Lake in Stockholm Township, the daughter of Grace (Eggert) and E. P. Burkstrand.
She attended North Grass Lake country school for eight years, and Cokato High School for four years, graduating in 1931. The following year she took a teacher’s training class in Cokato, graduating in 1932, with a certificate to teach in rural schools.
Her teaching career lasted for 25 years, and she taught in various Wright County schools, as well as teaching a homebound student. She took many refresher courses at St. Cloud and Mankato state colleges.
A lifelong member of Stockholm Lutheran Church in Cokato, Irene was baptized, attended Sunday school, was confirmed, taught Sunday school, and was married and buried there.
Irene and Raymond (Bill) Johnson were married in 1951. To this union, one daughter was born, Carol Ann. Bill passed away in 1961 of a heart attack.
Irene went to work at the jewelry store in Cokato after Bill died, retiring in 1988, after working there for 25 years.
In addition to her husband, Bill, Irene was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Clifford and Edgar; and a sister, Joyce.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Barnaal; two grandsons, Andrew Barnaal and Adam Barnaal; a sister-in-law, Gladys Johnson of Annandale; cousins; nephews; nieces; and friends.
