Monica E. Kittock Obituary – 8/1/09

Monica E. (Ramola) Kittock, age 106, a life-long resident of Delano, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, in Buffalo.

Monica was born April 16, 1903, in Waverly, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Ramola.

Monica’s family moved to Delano when she was a small child. It was there that she attended a small country school ,with dreams of becoming a teacher.

Eventually, Monica moved to Minneapolis, where she worked for a clothing manufacturer. She did receive a high school equivalency diploma and attended night school.

Monica married Constantine (CM) Kittock Sept. 26, 1928. Constantine was the son of Frank and Frances Kittock, and had attended classes at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Delano with Monica.

Making the Kittock family farm home, they raised four children, Father Francis, Alfred, Irene Monica, and Rick.

During the Depression, Monica was the family bookkeeper. Though times were difficult, she made sure all their children attended parochial school and piano lessons. She was “Polish Mama,” dedicated to her family.

Monica loved gardening, keeping the family in plenty of fresh and canned food. She enjoyed playing cards and, after her husband died in 1967, she and her brother, Ambrose would attend weekly Euchre parties.

Monica drove her car until she was in her early 90s, and remained on the family farm until the summer of 2002, when she moved in with Marlene Little, a licensed care provider for the elderly. Monica enjoyed uncommonly good health, free of any medications. Her good health could be contributed to her spunky outlook on life.

Monica suffered a series of small strokes March 24, 2009, and moved to a hospice run by Mary Jo Buskey in Buffalo, where she died peacefully.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Constantine; brothers, Felix, Alex, and Ambrose; and a sister, Ann.

Monica is survived by her children, Rev. Francis, Alfred (Annette), Monica (Leonard) Sargent, and Richard (Claudia); a sister, Rufina Florek; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial took place Friday, Aug. 7 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Delano. The Rev. Francis Kittock was celebrant of the Mass, with Pastor Fr. Christopher Wenthe, Rev. John Donahue, and Deacon Rev. Mr. Stephen Najarian concelebrating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Casket bearers were Michelle Johnson, Mark Kittock, Mitchell Kittock, Philip Kittock, Richard Kittock, Riley Kittock, Ryne Kittock, and Steve Sargent.

Arrangements by the Iten Funeral Home in Delano.

Portions of this obituary were taken from a May 26, 2008, article in the Delano Herald Journal written by DHJ staff writer Jen Bakken, shortly after Monica celebrated her 105th birthday.
