Lemuel Ray Knapp, age 67, of Rockford, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis.
He was born Oct. 17, 1941, in Dearborn, MI, to Lemuel and Margaret (Dean) Knapp.
Ray served in the Army during the Korean War, being discharged in 1966, at Ft. Riley, KS.
He served as a volunteer fireman for the City of Rockford for 26 years, and was a life member of American Legion Post 628. Ray served on the planning and zoning commission in Rockford, and taught firearms safety for many years in the Rockford and Delano systems.
Ray liked to dress as a clown and was a member of the Rockford Clown Club. He served as Santa Claus for many years when needed.
Due to complications from diabetes, Ray has lived at the Golden Living Center in Delano for over five years. He loved to tend his garden and grow flowers.
Ray is survived by his wife, Marietta; his son, Trevor and Renee Knapp; and an adopted daughter, Christine and Don Matten-Gilson, and her family.
Funeral services were Thursday, Aug. 27 at the Iten Funeral Chapel in Delano with Pastor Donna Rohrer of Our Father’s Lutheran Church in Rockford officiating. Interment was at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, with military honors.
Arrangements were by the Iten Funeral Home in Delano.
