Thomas Jacob Laurilla, age 67, of Canistota, SD, formerly of Cokato, died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, at the Canistota Good Samaritan Center in Canistota, SD.
He was born Feb. 23, 1942, in Aberdeen, SD to Toivo and Anna (Vaaraniemi) Laurilla. Thomas grew up in Frederick, SD and attended school there until he was 10, then moved to Cokato after his father died and his mother married Oscar Kotila.
Tom graduated from Cokato High School and attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, where he was certified in welding of various metals. He was a welder in many states for many years.
Tom is survived by his sisters, Alice Schad of Black Hawk, SD, and Helen Meza of Terrebonne, OR; his daughter, Jennifer Montgomery, and two grandchildren, Jeremiah and Hannah Montgomery, all of California; two stepbrothers, Martin (Joyce) Kotila, and George (Doris) Kotila, all of Cokato; a stepsister, Impie (Dean) Olson of Cokato; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather; a brother-in-law, Calvin S. Schad; two stepsisters; and a stepbrother.
Funeral services are set for Monday, Aug. 24 at 10:30 a.m. at Pine Lawn Memorial Park Whispering Pines Chapel in Rapid City, SD, preceded by visitation at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City from 9 to 10 a.m. Online guestbook is available at www.osheimschmidt.com.
