Kenneth D. Lemmage, 85

Kenneth Dale Lemmage, age 85, longtime resident of Rockford, and Rockford’s barber for over 50 years, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009.

He was born Aug. 20, 1924, in Sawyer, ND, the son of Mamie Mae Ingersol Lemmage and Samuel Harry Lemmage. Ken moved to Rockford at the age of 3, where he resided all the rest of his life.

Ken served in World War II and also the Korean War. He was a trained pilot in the US Air Force.

In 1945, he was part owner and operator of a milk hauling service for the Rockford and Buffalo areas. The business was sold in 1949, and Ken went to barber school, becoming a licensed master barber in January 1950.

He was recalled into the Air Force during the Korean War. Ken returned to Rockford in the spring of 1952, and resumed barbering.

Ken was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran Christian faith March 6, 1947, by Pastor Samuel Baer. His memory verse was Matthew 24: 13, “He that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.”

Ken married Verna Vergin in 1947, and they celebrated 62 happy years of married life. They were blessed with three sons, Kenneth B., Tommy, and Barry.

Ken was a long-time member of Cross Lutheran Church in Rockford, a charter member of the Rockford Lions Club, which was formed June 20, 1956; and served as a school board member of District 883, when it switched from the Common to Independent District in the ‘50s.

Ken was also a life-long member of the American Legion, and a charter member of the Rockford Area Business Association, formed March 27, 1979. He served on many other committees including the Elmwood Cemetery Board, acting as their treasurer from 1987-2003.

Ken had time for many hobbies including wood working and carving, and he was a great fixer-upper.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Goldie; and three brothers, Gerald, Omar, and Ivar.

Ken is survived by his loving wife, Verna; three sons, Kenneth B. (Debbie), Tom (Jan), and Barry (Cindy); nine grandchildren, Cami (Chad) Stivers, Matthew (Kirsten) Lemmage, Zachary Lemmage; Jennifer and Michael Lemmage; Addie (James) Bohlin, and Corrine, Daniel (DJ), and Joanna Lemmage; two great-grandchildren, Samantha Stivers and Katherine Lemmage; a step-grandchild, Isabella Lupino; two brothers, Harpo and Jack; and a sister, Ruth.

Funeral services took place Saturday, Sept. 6 at 2 p.m. at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rockford with Pastor Michael Barlow officiating. Janet Beise was the organist for the funeral service.

Visitation was Friday, Sept. 5 from, 4 to 8 p.m. at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Casket bearers were Wayne Loeffler, Jerome Vergin, Hal Lemmage, John Dolder, Matt Lemmage, and Michael Lemmage.

The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo served the family.
