Betty Eleanora Mattson, age 85, of Hutchinson, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, at Prairie Senior Cottages in Hutchinson.
She was born July 11, 1923, in Cedar Mills Township, Meeker County, the daughter of Andrew C. and Dina (Nelson) Beckstrand. Betty grew up in the Cedar Mills Township area. She attended School District 52, and then attended Litchfield High School, graduating in 1941.
Betty was baptized and confirmed at Beckville Lutheran Church in rural Litchfield, and was presently a member of Riverside Assembly of God Church in Hutchinson. She had been active in the Women’s Ministries and had taught Sunday school and Bible school for several years.
Betty was united in marriage to Lyle Mattson Nov. 30, 1941, at Beckville Lutheran Church in rural Litchfield. The couple made their home and raised their family on the Mattson family farm in the Lake Jennie area, where Betty lived until 2006, when she moved to Prairie Senior Cottages in Hutchinson.
Over the years, she had also been employed at Tonka Toys in Mound, and had worked for 3M in Hutchinson, where she retired after 17 years of service.
Betty loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She also loved to spend time in her garden, and enjoyed canning the results of her labor.
A wonderful cook, Betty baked many loaves of bread over the years. She enjoyed bird watching, traveling, bowling, watching game shows, playing Skip-Bo and Scrabble, and doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. At the age of 75 years, Betty still enjoyed spending time splitting wood for her home.
She is survived by her children, Victoria (Marvin) Stuber, Richard (Sandee) Mattson, Colleen (Steve) Menze, all of Hutchinson, Mary (Larry) Griep of Maplewood, DeAnna (Roy) Guerrero, and Duane (Cecilia) Mattson, all of Dassel; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her siblings, Alice (Clifford) Dahlman of Dassel; Andrew G. (Janice) Beckstrand of Delano;, and Benjamin (Connie) Beckstrand of Keller, TX; and a sister-in-law, Lois Beckstrand of Litchfield.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle; parents; siblings Wendell, Melvin, Anna, and Myrtle; an infant brother, Hermus; an infant sister, Eunice; and a grandson, Santiago (Sonny).
The funeral service was Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 10 a.m. at Riverside Assembly of God Church in Hutchinson with Pastor Randy Adams officiating. Interment was at the Oakland Cemetery in Hutchinson.
Visitation took place Monday evening, Jan. 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Riverside Assembly of God Church in Hutchinson.
The Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel handled the arrangements.
