Roland E. (Red) Miller, age 84, of Lester Prairie, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina.
He was born Aug. 3, 1924, in Bergen Township, Lester Prairie, the son of William and Bertha (Schuette) Miller. Red was baptized Aug. 24, 1924, by the Rev. Arthur Spleiss, and confirmed April 10, 1938, by the Rev. E. H. Stahlke, both at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie.
Red was united in marriage to Gladys M. Kohls June 23, 1951, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany by the Rev. Fred Phfotenhauer. God blessed their marriage with a son, Michael.
A graduate of Lester Prairie High School, Red was a member of the 1941 Lester Prairie High School basketball team that went to the state high school basketball tournament.
Red served his country during WWII in the US Army in Germany. He belonged to the Lester Prairie American Legion and the Akeley VFW.
Red owned and operated the Red Mark Hardware Store in Lester Prairie for many years.
He enjoyed wood working, hunting, traveling and spending time at the cabin on Bass Lake in Akeley. Red’s other hobbies included music, trap shooting, horseshoe, and playing pool.
An active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, Red served as a trustee and a faithful, longtime member of the choir.
Red was a caring husband, dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa.
He is survived by his loving family: his wife of 58 years, Gladys; grandchildren Jeff and Beth Miller, and Jason Miller, all of St. Cloud; great-grandchildren Tiffany and Mika Miller; sister Lorena Wolff of Maple Grove; sister-in-law Marion Miller of Minnetonka; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Red was preceded in death by his son, Michael; father and mother, William and Bertha Miller; brothers Herbert, Lorenz and William “Billy” Miller; and sisters Leona Miller and Hilda Krueger.
The funeral service took place Monday, Jan. 19 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie with the Rev. Eric M. Nelson officiating. Interment was at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Lester Prairie.
Visitation was Sunday, Jan. 18 from 4-8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia, with evening prayers at 7:30 p.m. and continued Monday for one hour prior to the service at church.
Casket bearers were Paul Krueger, Bob Miller, Craig Kohls, Dave Klug, Eric Roepke and Paul Roepke. Honorary casket bearer was Ray Kohler.
