Warren Nicholas Nelson, age 87, of Hutchinson, died Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at his home in Dassel, following a brief bout with cancer.
He was born April 15, 1922, in Hutchinson, the son of Willie and Mae (Bast) Nelson. Warren was baptized and confirmed in his faith as an adult at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Hutchinson.
He received his education in Hutchinson, and attended both the public schools and Maplewood Academy.
Warren was united in marriage to Mae Ostlund Jan. 29, 1943, at her parents’ home in the Lake Jennie community. This marriage was blessed with two children, Audre and Lynn.
Warren and Mae resided in Dassel, Wayzata, and Hutchinson. They shared 65 years of marriage, until Mae passed away March 12, 2008.
Warren held employment as a superintendent in the bridge construction industry, and later founded his own company, SSI (Structural Specialties Inc.) in Hutchinson. He worked in the industry for 50 years in the Dakotas and Minnesota.
Warren was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Hutchinson. He served as a board member of the Bear Lake Township Board in Meeker County, after being elected as a write-in candidate. Warren also was a member of AA.
He enjoyed working on his hobby farm, going to auctions, and visiting over coffee. Warren was proud of being a “field engineer” and often stated “I learned everything about bridges in the field.”
A loving father who cherished the time he spent with his family, Warren always let them know he was proud of their accomplishments. He also enjoyed spending time with his favorite pet, Shasta.
Warren is survived by his children, Audre and Robert Johnson of New Prague, and Lynn Nelson of Tioga, TX; grandchildren Rochelle and David Sorensen of Jordan, Nicole and Bradley Schmitz of New Prague, Jake Nelson of Lewisville, TX; and Bradley and Michelle Michaud of Tuttle, OK; and great -grandchildren Krysta Sorensen, Lucas Sorensen, Matthew Schmitz, Emily Schmitz, Benjamin Schmitz, Megan Michaud, Jackson Johnson Nesmoe, Tyler Nesmoe, and Jace Nesmoe.
He is further survived by a special niece, Maria Hanft of Minneapolis; brother-in-law and sisters-in law James and Shirley Ostlund of Dassel, and LaVerne Nelson of Mound; special neighbors and helpers, Al and Naomi Barkeim, Brian, Shannon and Bodie Brice, and Gary and Holly Hotovec, all of Hutchinson; nieces; nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, Mae, Warren was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Mae (Gruenhagen) Nelson; brothers, Donald, Louis, and William Nelson; grandsons Chance Nelson and Jesse Johnson; a nephew, Larry Nelson; sisters-in-law Margaret Johnson and Florence Jensen; and brother-in-law Raymond Ostlund.
Funeral services took place Saturday, July 11 at 11 a.m. at the Vineyard United Methodist Church in Hutchinson, with interment in the Oakland Cemetery in Hutchinson. The Revs. Scott Grorud and Paulus Pilgrim officiated. Organist was Shirley Holtz. Soloist Bonnie Baumetz sang “On Eagle’s Wings,” and “The Love Of God Is Greater Far.” Congregational hymns were “In The Garden,” and “Amazing Grace.”
Casket bearers were Jake Nelson, Bradley Schmitz, David Sorensen, Donald Nelson, Bruce Nelson, Matthew Schmitz, Lucas Sorensen, and Bradley Michaud. Honorary bearers were Warren’s great-grandchildren: Benjamin Schmitz, Krysta Sorensen, Emily Schmitz, Jackson Johnson Nesmoe, Tyler Nesmoe, Jace Nesmoe, and Megan Michaud.
