Evangeline “Vannie” Hope Olson, age 81, of Dassel, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at her home.
Vannie Hope (Nelson) Olson, the daughter of Dr. F.O. and Ruby (Anderson) Nelson, was born Jan. 18, 1927, in Buffalo. She was baptized and confirmed at the Buffalo Covenant Church.
She graduated from the Buffalo High School, and later attended and worked at the University of Minnesota and the Swedish Hospital Nursing Schools. Vannie earned her LPN nursing degree a few years later.
She was united in marriage to Norris Olson May 1, 1953, at the Covenant church in Buffalo. They made their home and raised a family south of Dassel, where Norris farmed with his father, Oscar Olson.
Vannie worked for more than 30 years at the Dassel Nursing Home. She enjoyed the people she worked with and gave great care to those under her charge. Her first day of work at the Dassel Nursing Home was in 1963, the same day that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
An active member of the Evangelical Covenant Church, Vannie served on Covenant Women committees and also as an elder. She was a long-time member of the Collinwood Club, and enjoyed their fellowship.
After retirement, Vannie volunteered at the Dassel Lakeside Community Home at the front desk. She loved to visit with family and friends, and was an avid reader.
Vannie loved everyone and had a special love for her husband, family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Vannie’s rye bread was a favorite for many. She will deeply be missed by her family and numerous friends.
She is survived by her husband, Norris of Dassel; children, Keith (Jan) Olson of St. Cloud, Kurt Olson of Hutchinson, Alan (Nancy) Olson of Dassel, and Mary Beth (Brian) Good of Litchfield; seven grandchildren, Tiffany Olson of Rochester, Jacob (Jessica) Olson and their two children, Evan and Haylee Olson of Clearwater, Andrea (Eric) Christensen of Rochester, Stephanie (John) Rammel of Sartell, Tara Olson and her son, Myles of Rochester, and Eric and Michael Good of Litchfield; and siblings Robert (Avis) Nelson of Buffalo, Jim (Arlene) Nelson of Buffalo, and Sallie (Gerald) Anderson of Buffalo.
Vannie was preceded in death by an infant daughter at birth; and her parents, Dr. F.O. and Ruby Nelson.
The funeral service was Monday, Dec. 29 at 11 a.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Dassel with the Rev. Keith Carlson officiating. Interment was at the Dassel Cemetery.
Visitation was Sunday, Dec. 28 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Dassel, and continued Monday, Dec. 29 for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel.
