Kerry Bruce Olson, age 64, of Glencoe, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at his home.
He was born July 21, 1944, in St. Paul, the son of Norman and Phyllis (Lagergren) Olson. Kerry was baptized Aug. 20, 1944, at Como Park Lutheran Church in St. Paul by the Rev. Otto Schmidt, and later confirmed into the faith May 17, 1959, at Green Lake Lutheran Church in Spicer by Pastor Julius Hermunslie.
Kerry graduated from Willmar High School in 1962, and went on to attend Willmar Community College, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Minnesota Law School. After graduating in 1969, he began his legal career in Minneapolis with the Smith, Johnson and Persian law firm.
Kerry entered the United States Army May 20, 1970, and was stationed at Fort Dix, NJ. He was honorably discharged Jan. 31, 1972, and received an Army Commendation Medal.
Kerry was united in marriage with Katherine Carlson On Aug. 7, 1970, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in White Bear Lake by Pastor Harold Olson. The couple moved to Glencoe in 1972, when Kerry began working at the Gavin Law Office.
He served as Glencoe City Attorney for 30 years, and was long-time city attorney for the communities of Lester Prairie, Norwood Young America, Plato, Silver Lake, and Stewart.
Kerry was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council, building committee, and pastoral call committee, and taught ninth-grade confirmation.
He was a member of the Glencoe Jaycees, Rotary, and McLeod County, Eighth District, and Minnesota State bar associations.
Kerry enjoyed golf, fishing, world travel, reading, history, supporting community and school activities, and especially spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Kerry was preceded in death by his parents; an infant nephew, Jonathan Hamilton; parents-in-law Lynn and Sylvia Carlson; and niece Cortney Carlson.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine, of Glencoe; children Matthew Olson of San Diego, CA, and Kristin (Eduardo) Rodriguez of Chaska; grandchildren Katherine and Kierra Rodriguez; siblings Joyce (DeVane) Lundquist of Willmar, R. Douglas (Carol) Olson of Eagan, and Charis (Douglas) Hamilton of Marshall; brothers-in-law Lynn (Karen) Carlson of Maui, HI, and Richard (Carol) Carlson of Sanford, NC; sister-in-law Elizabeth (Thomas) Hansen of White Bear Lake; and other relatives and friends.
A memorial service celebrating Kerry’s life took place Sunday, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Glencoe with the Revs. Kristi Schiroo and Tom Hansen officiating. Music was provided by organist Peg Hatlestad, vocalists Randy and Kay Wilson, and the church choir, with accompaniment by Twyla Kirkeby. Musical selections included “Beautiful Savior,” “Blest Are They,” “The King Is Coming,” “The Lord’s Prayer,” “Here I Am Lord,” and “Go Make Disciples.”
Serving as honorary bearers were Mike Gavin, Jody Winters, Dennis Twiss, Jason Thiemann, Al Albrecht, Jeanne Conkel, Terry Conkel, and Mike Savre.
A gathering of family and friends took place Saturday evening at the church.
