Peter Myron Salonek, age 48, of Buffalo, and formerly of Tinian Island M.P. Northern Mariana Islands in the South Pacific (near Guam), died Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis.
He was born June 2, 1961, in Watertown, the son of George J. and Eleanor (Lyrek) Salonek.
Peter graduated from Buffalo High School in 1979. He later received a tool maker/numerical control degree from Ridgewater Community College, a machining degree from North Hennepin Community College, an associate’s degree from Normandale Community College, and a bachelor of science degree from Metropolitan State.
He honorably served in the US Marine Corps from 1984 to 1987.
Peter was formerly employed for 20 years in machining. He also was an educator and taught one year of junior/senior high school at San Jose MP on Tinian.
Peter was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Buffalo Ward.
He is survived by his mother, Eleanor I. Salonek of Buffalo; brothers and sisters, Mark Salonek of St. Paul, Matthew Salonek (Patty Winters) of Delano, Mary (Edward) Schmidt of Big Lake, Martha (Charles) Moy of Waverly, George P. Salonek of Annandale, Michael (JoAnn) Salonek of St. Michael, Monica (Douglas) Ruzicka of Montrose, Muriel (Jeffrey) King of Maple Grove, MaDonna (David) Robertson of Lodi, WI, and Marguerite M. (Gary A.) Kasper of St. Michael; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews.
Peter was preceded in death by his father, George J. Salonek; a brother, Myron J. Salonek; and a nephew, Justin M. Ruzicka.
The funeral service was Friday, Aug. 14 at 9 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Buffalo Ward with Bishop Douglas A. Elwood officiating. Interment with military rites followed at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Honorary casket bearers were Jordan Ruzicka, John King, Scott Robertson, and Nicholas Kasper.
Casket bearers were Mark Humphreys, Aaron Salonek, Napoleon LePage, Lance Moy, Jesse Salonek, and Carl Salonek.
The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo served the family.
