Curtis Schwalbe Obituary – 9/17/09


Curtis Schwalbe, age 82, of Delano, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waconia.

Curtis was born Nov. 4, 1926, in San Francisco Township, Carver County, the son of Benjamin H. and Lydia E. (Bahr) Schwalbe. He was baptized at Zoar United Church of Christ in Chaska, and confirmed at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Bongards.

Curtis was united in marriage to Vivian E. Lemmerman May 5, 1948, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Watertown Twp., with the Rev. John Spomer officiating.

Curtis was a dairy farmer until 1973, and was very devoted to his cows. He continued to crop farm until his retirement.

He and Vivian sold the farm and built their dream home on seven acres retained from the farm. In 1998, Curtis and Vivian moved to Delano.

A loving husband, dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa, Curtis loved fishing, gardening and woodworking.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Chad Lehrke; father and mother Ben and Lydia Schwalbe; brothers Lewellyn Schwalbe, and Norman Schwalbe; sister Yvonne Fink; and brother-in-law Donald Fink.

Curtis is survived by his loving family; wife Vivian; children and spouses Joan and John Martin II of Muskego, WI, Donna and Lyle Lehrke of New Germany, Susan and Douglas Hoese of Watertown, and Richard and Diane Schwalbe of Victoria; grandchildren Rev. Joshua and Katie Martin, John III and Christine Martin, Aaron and Amy Martin, Rev. Micah and Julie Martin, Anna Martin, Leah Martin, Eve and Rev. Noah Headrick, Samuel Martin, Anita and Tobias Buhr, Nona and Jon Latzig, Audra Lehrke, Thomas and Nicole Hoese, and Brian and Sara Hoese; and great-grandchildren Allison, Lucas, Madelyn, Kaitlyn, John IV, Marcus, Paige, Aiden, Calaen, Grady, Olivia, Josiah, Hannah, Charis, Shelby, Mari, Isabelle, Eleni, Violet, Amber and Nolan.

He is further survivied by sister and brother-in-law Ardes and Leonard Koehnen of Victoria; brother Calvin Schwalbe of Garrison; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Lila Schwalbe of Aberdeen, SD, Elaine Stahlke of Eden Prairie, Orla Mueller of Watertown, Myra Graeber of Sartell, and Ernie and Mary Lemmerman of Delano; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service took place Monday, Sept. 21 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Delano with the Rev. Paul Marggraf officiating. Interment was at Watertown Public Cemetery.

Visitation was Sunday, Sept. 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia, with a chapel service at 7 p.m., and continued Monday for one hour prior to the service at church.

Curtis’ grandsons were his casket bearers: Rev. Joshua Martin, John Martin, Aaron Martin, Rev. Micah Martin, Samuel Martin, Thomas Hoese, and Brian Hoese.
