LorJean Irene Selchow Obituary – 06/09/09


LorJean Irene Selchow, age 74, of Lester Prairie, died Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at Glencoe Regional Health Services.

She was born March 21, 1935, in Bergen Township, the daughter of Arthur and Malinda (Schmalz) Seemann. LorJean was baptized April 7, 1935, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie by the Rev. J.A. Schert, and confirmed into the faith April 10, 1949, also at St. Peter, by the Rev. Bert Streufert.

LorJean grew up on a farm in Bergen Township and attended St. Peter Parochial School through the eighth grade. She graduated from the Glencoe High School.

She was united in marriage with Verndale Selchow Oct. 24, 1954, at St. Peter Lutheran Church by the Rev. William Erb. The couple moved to Crestview, FL, where Verndale was stationed, and then LorJean moved to Minneapolis while Verndale was sent overseas.

After his return, they resided on their farm west of Lester Prairie.

LorJean worked for Ministers Life and Casualty, GMAC, and Hardware Mutual insurance companies. She then took time off to raise her six children, and returned to work in 1982, for McLeod County Public Health Nursing Services, retiring in 2000.

LorJean was very involved at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, serving in the Ladies Aid, as council secretary, on the board of education, as a Lutheran Women’s Missionary League delegate, and as a Sunday school, Bible class, and vacation Bible school teacher.

She enjoyed sewing, reading, bird watching, and gardening, especially her flowers. She also liked to travel, go camping, attend music concerts, play the organ and piano, and was a loyal Twins fan. LorJean loved her family and spending time with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Allan Selchow; and a sister, Bernice Ernst.

LorJean is survived by her husband, Verndale Selchow of Lester Prairie; children Gary Selchow (wife Cindy) of Buffalo, Lee Selchow (wife Linda), Kevin Selchow, all of Lester Prairie; Ann Williamson (husband Russ) of Waconia, and Sherri Selchow of the Twin Cities; and grandchildren Jennifer, Ryan, and Eric Selchow of Buffalo, Jesse Selchow of Hutchinson, Tracy Selchow of Lester Prairie, Nicholas and Chelsea Selchow of Lester Prairie, and Jeffrey and Mark Vanderlinde of Waconia.

She is further survived by siblings Clarence Seemann (wife Lorraine) of Lester Prairie, and Deloris Seemann of Waconia; brothers and sisters-in-law Ruben Ernst of Glencoe, Wayne Selchow (wife Violet), and Joyce Miller, all of Lester Prairie; as well as other relatives and friends.

The funeral service took place Saturday, June 13 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie with Vicar David Erbel officiating. The organist was Kay Gueningsman. Hymns included “I Know that My Redeemer Lives,” “Just as I Am,” “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” and “Abide with Me.” Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Serving as casket bearers were LorJean’s grandchildren: Jennifer Selchow, Ryan Selchow, Eric Selchow, Jesse Selchow, Tracy Selchow, Nicholas Selchow, Chelsea Selchow, Jeffrey Vanderlinde, and Mark Vanderlinde.
