Wayne H. Selchow Obituary – 8/1/09


Wayne Herman Selchow, age 74, of Lester Prairie, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at Glencoe Regional Health Services.

He was born July 29, 1935, in Arlington, the son of Fred and Anita Panning Selchow. Wayne was baptized Aug. 11, 1935, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Arlington by Pastor Robert Heidmann. He was instructed in the Lutheran catechism and confirmed in the Christian faith April 10, 1949, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Bergen Township, McLeod County by Pastor Bert Streufert.

Wayne graduated from Lester Prairie High School in 1953, and honorably served his country in the US Army in post-war Korea.

Wayne was joined in holy marriage with Violet L. Busch June 12, 1965, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine by Pastor O.F. Herder. God blessed their marriage with six children.

Wayne was formerly employed by Herb Birkholz in building construction. He later worked at Tonka Toys in Mound until 1984, and then at Lester Prairie Schools for 18 years as a custodian. Wayne retired following a stroke in 2001.

Through the years, Wayne raised beef cattle and chickens on his family farm in Bergen Township, four miles west of Lester Prairie.

He enjoyed fishing with his sons, and watching the Twins and Vikings on TV. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his 13 grandchildren. Wayne was fond of traveling, and was a very easygoing person.

A faithful member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, Wayne was a past congregation president and a former elder. He belonged to the Men’s Club and was a longtime choir member. Wayne and Violet were also former church custodians.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Violet L. Selchow; six children: Carolyn (James) Toenies of Lester Prairie, Jennifer (Loren) Vanderlinde of St. Bonifacius, Laura Duenow of Hutchinson, Glenn Selchow of Howard Lake, Paul (Joleen) Selchow of Priest River, ID, and Douglas (Rachel) Selchow of Menomonie, WI; and 13 grandchildren: Kelli, Katie, and Jacob Paschke; Valerie, Matthew, and Karen Vanderlinde; Joshua, Alex, and Chad Duenow; Emily and Eric Selchow and Jordan and Morgan Selchow.

He is further survived by a brother and a sister, Verndale Selchow and Joyce Miller, both of Lester Prairie; a sister-in-law, Edna Ide of Glencoe; mother-in-law Myrtle Busch of Glencoe; and many other relatives and friends.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Anita Selchow, a sister-in-law, Lor Jean Selchow, father-in-law George Busch; and a brother-in-law, Vernon Ide.

The funeral service took place Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie with Pastor David R. Erbel officiating. The organist was Luke Dahl, and the church choir sang “Abide with Me.” Congregational hymns were “Beautiful Savior,” “On Eagles’ Wings,” and “Jesus Thy Blood and Righteousness.” Interment followed at Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation was Tuesday, Aug. 4 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation continued Wednesday, Aug. 5. at the church one hour prior to services.

Casket bearers were Gary Selchow, Lee Selchow, Kevin Selchow, Joey Miller, Ryan Ide, and Jeff Brelje.
