Borghild C. Smith Obituary – 2/24/09


Borghild C. Smith, age 99, of Delano passed away peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, at the Golden Living Center in Delano.

She was born Aug. 4, 1909, to Karl and Petra (Nelson) Kvaale in Hope Township, MN.

Borghild was a longtime resident of Delano, living there since 1944. She was an active member of the Delano United Methodist Church, as well as the Ladies Aid.

She loved dancing and gardening, and her favorite hobby was her family.

Borghild was preceded in death by her husband, William G. Jorgensen Jr; and her husband of 62 years, Urban L. Smith; sons-in-law Donald Eckhoff and Philip Kunkel; a great-grandson Gage Olander; her parents, Karl and Petra (Nelson) Kvaale; sisters and brothers-in law Marie and Lyle Pickering, Pearl and Raymond Brygger, Clara and Francis McCalpin, and Nora Sorenson; and brothers-in-law Norman Trautman and Harold Jorgensen.

She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Joyce Eckhoff, Beverly and Paul Olander, and Avis Kunkel; sons and daughters-in-law Dale and Jan Smith, and David and Alicia Smith; 17 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters and brothers-in-law Evelyn Trautman, Helen Olsen, Dorothy and Allan Hansen, and Lester Sorenson; as well as other loving relatives and friends.

Funeral services took place Sunday, March 1 at 2 p.m. at the Delano United Methodist Church with the Rev. Matthew Sipe officiating. Interment was in the Delano Public Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Tierney Sisk, Sarah Musty, Charles Kunkel, Britt Olander, Scott Eckhoff, and Jeff Eckhoff. Honorary bearers were Lori Perry, Caryn Anderson, Paula Thibault, Melissa Hampton, Kris Bausman, Andrea Baloga, Karla Kunkel, Mark Smith, Brenda Lange, Paula Ginder, and Brenda Rudrud.

Arrangements were by the Iten Funeral Home in Delano.
