Donna Marie Johnson Sorenson, age 89, of Dassel, died Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, at the Lakeside Health Care Center of Dassel.
She was born June 8, 1920, in Canby, MN, the daughter of Peter Erik and Gunhilda Johnson. Donna was baptized at the Garfield Lutheran Church in Madison, MN.
Donna received her education in a rural school near Madison.
While visiting relatives in the Dassel area, she met her future husband, Embert Sorenson. Following his discharge from the Army, they were united in marriage March 24, 1946, at the Garfield Lutheran Church in Madison.
Following their marriage, Donna and Embert made their home at Kingston for seven years and in 1953, moved to a farm south of Dassel, where they lived and farmed until moving into the city of Dassel in 1989. For the past four years, Donna has been a resident of the Lakeside Health Care Center of Dassel.
Donna had been a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church of Dassel, and a neighborhood birthday club while living on the farm.
She loved children, and especially the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A very good cook, Donna enjoyed putting on a great meal for her family, relatives, and friends.
Donna is survived by her children, Kathleen Brede of Hutchinson, and Roger Sorenson of Willmar; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Embert, who died in 1994; a brother, Clifford; and a sister, Annie.
The funeral service took place Wednesday, Aug. 26 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel, with the Rev. Steven Olson officiating. Organist was Florine Osness, and soloist Sheldon Hedin sang “Little Brown Church in the Wildwood” and “What Wondrous Love Is This.” Interment was at the Dassel Community Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Wally Sorenson, Dale Johnson, Al Gettel, Lloyd Johnson, Dan Sorenson, and Jacob Knick.
Arrangements were by the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel.
