Agnes R. Zaruba, 94

Agnes Rita Zaruba, age 94, formerly of Silver Lake, died Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at Glencoe Regional Health Services.

She was born March 1, 1915, in Hale Township, McLeod County, the daughter of Charles and Josephine Chermak Ruzicka.

Agnes attended elementary school in District 62 in McLeod County, and graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1931.

Agnes and John Zaruba were joined in holy marriage Aug. 28, 1934, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Silver Lake. The couple farmed for five years and then moved into Silver Lake.

Agnes was formerly employed at Joe Lowy’s Super Market, Gruebec’s Grocery, Rutzke Café, all in Silver Lake; Coffee Shop for Clarence Ruzicka, Ruzicka Super Market, Joan Paul Coffee Shop, Tastee Burger, owned by Clarence Ruzicka; Joe Wesley Pharmacy in Hutchinson, and Armark Catering at HTI in Hutchinson.

She was a faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake, and belonged to the CCW and the Rosary Society.

Through the years, Agnes helped many people and often drove many to church. She enjoyed baking kolaches, pies, and cakes, and gave most of them away.

She is survived by a nephew and nieces, Henry (Shirley) Vorlicek Jr. of Silver Lake, Elaine (Bob) Wozniak-Mullin of Cokato, and Rosalie Knott of New Germany; great nieces and nephews; great, great nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Lorraine (Edward) Zaruba.

Agnes was preceded in death by her husband, John, March 16, 1981; her parents, Charles and Josephine Ruzicka; two sisters, Mary Svanda and Anna Vorlicek; a brother, Robert Ruzicka; and two nephews, Jerome and Ivan Ruzicka.

A Mass of Christian Burial took place Saturday, July 25 at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake. Father Brian Oestreich was the celebrant. Organist for the Mass was Carrie Knott, and the vocalist, Alice Nowak, sang “Serdeczna Matko.” Reader was Melissa Anderson. Gift bearers were Rhonda, Wayne, and Brianna Decker.

Visitation was Friday, July 24 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Maresh Funeral Home in Silver Lake, with a parish prayer service at 4 p.m. A combined CCW and Rosary Society rosary was recited at 8 p.m.

Casket bearers were David Knott, Gerald Knott, Roger Knott, Duane Wozniak, Kevin Vorlicek, and Ron Vorlicek.

The Maresh Funeral Home in Silver Lake served the family.
