Marvin L. Ashwill Obituary – 1/26/2010


A memorial service will take place Saturday, April 10 for Marvin L. Ashwill, age 92, of rural Dassel, who died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, in Quartzsite, AZ.

The Rev. Lloyd Melvie will officiate at the 2 p.m. service at Evangelical Covenant Church in Dassel, with visitation for one hour prior to the service at the church. A private interment will be held.

He was born Feb. 4, 1917, in Sanborn, IA, the son of Don Eli and Aina (Byttynen) Ashwill. When he was an infant, his family moved to the Kingston area, where he was baptized and later confirmed in the Old Apostolic Lutheran faith.

Marvin was united in marriage to Doris Olson of South Haven June 18, 1939.

They lived and farmed in the Lake Sylvia area, Annandale and Kimball. In 1956, they moved to their current farm in Collinwood Township, Dassel.

In addition to farming, Marvin developed real estate at Melody Lane on Lake Francis, and Ashwill Shores on Collinwood Lake.

Marvin enjoyed spending time with his family, attending fairs, steam and tractor shows; collecting antiques, traveling, sharing stories, and visiting with friends over coffee. He will be remembered for his quiet sense of humor and kind heart.

Marvin is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Doris I. Ashwill; sons Darrell Ashwill of Dassel, and Dennis (Rosa) Ashwill of Plankinton, SD; grandchildren Jason (Christine) Ashwill of St. Cloud, and Meredith (Tom) Lyon of St. Joseph; great-grandchildren Michael Ashwill, Danielle Lyon, and Chase Lyon; his half-sister, Pearl Zopfi of Blaine; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Bernice Smith, Clarence Ashwill, Harriet Smith, Leonard Ashwill, and Richard Ashwill; half-brother Orville Lenox; and daughter-in-laws Jean Ashwill (spouse of Darrell), and Susan Ashwill (spouse of Dennis).

There will be a memorial service planned for Marvin at a later date.
