David William DeWees, age 59, of Blaine, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010, at his home, surrounded by his family, after a courageous four-year battle with cancer, and is now walking streets of gold.
David was born Dec. 15, 1950, in Minneapolis, to Vernon and Dorothy (Banks) DeWees. He grew up in Richfield, and graduated from Richfield High School in 1969.
Dave started out working in the trucking industry with his father, performing clerical duties. He decided to pursue a career in radio and attended Brown Institute to become a DJ.
Dave was united in marriage to the love of his life, Joan Fredrickson Nov. 22, 1974, at the Covenant church in Dassel. The couple made their home in Blaine, and were blessed with three wonderful children.
Dave eventually returned to work in the trucking industry as a rate clerk and a dispatcher for many years until deregulation. He changed careers by attending drafting school and had been working for ITW/BGK Finishing Systems in Blaine in engineering support as a draftsman.
Dave loved life and was a kid at heart. He had a wonderful sense of humor and an infectious laugh. A great musician, he played in several bands throughout his life.
Dave loved the Beach Boys and didn’t miss a concert. In 2008, Dave had one of his dreams realized when he and his family spent a couple hours with Brian Wilson, the mastermind of the band’s music, backstage in Minneapolis.
Dave also spent much of his time enjoying Lionel trains and riding his tractors at the cabin on Lake Minnie Belle, near Litchfield, as often as possible. He was a talented wood worker and made many toys for his grandchildren and other projects for family members.
Dave and Joan were also fortunate to travel to many memorable places together. Dave truly loved to laugh and play with family and friends.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and his constant companions, Phoebe and Tootsie.
Dave is survived by his loving wife, Joan DeWees of Blaine; children, Eric (Jensen) DeWees of Minneapolis, Christy DeWees of Buffalo, and Andy (Melissa) DeWees of Blaine; four grandchildren, Alexander, Dominic, Drake, and Drew DeWees; mother Dorothy DeWees-Lindquist (Ralph) of Naples, FL; and siblings Karen (Steven) Post of Bloomington, Jeffrey (Marilyn) DeWees of Bloomington, D’Ann Clark of Apple Valley, Kathy DeWees (Sue Leonard) of Burnsville, and Vern (Cindy) DeWees of Monticello.
