Andrew Robert Erickson, age 96, passed from this life Saturday, May 22, 2010, at Cokato Manor.
He was born March 19, 1914, in a sauna at Paavola, Franklin Township, Houghton County, MI to Antti and Kriistina Hyvarinen (later Erickson).
Andrew worked for the WPA until moving to Detroit in 1936, where he worked at Restrick Lumber Co. (later ERB-Restrick) for 26 years. He then moved to “Generous” General Motors (GM), retiring in 1977, after 14 years. Andrew was very thankful to be employed at General Motors, and always said Detroit was good to him.
He married Sylvia Catherine Matilda Paso Sept. 4, 1937. The couple resided in Detroit, Livonia, Howell and Hancock, MI. They moved to Dassel, MN to live with daughter, Carolyn, in 1997.
Andrew was a lifelong member of the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his children: Ellwood (Judith) of Reston, VA, Eleanor Niska of Twin Falls, ID, Carolyn of Dassel, Ronald (Beth) of Ukiah, CA, Helen (Robert) Bastion of Hancock, MI, Stanley (MaryEllen) of Livonia, MI, Dennis (Gisela) of Plainwell, MI, Gary (Audrey) of Calumet, MI, John (Alyse Kay) of Pinckney, MI, Mary (Peter) Kokkonen of Iron Bridge, Ontario, Canada, and Norman (Sue) of Brighton, MI; 69 grandchildren; and 145 great-grandchildren; and a host of Christian friends.
Andrew was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Lillian, Anne, Mayme, infant Lempi, and Lempi; brother William; wife Sylvia; infant daughter Norma Jean; and son-in-law Charles Niska.
Services were conducted at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church of rural Dassel Sunday, May 30 with Warren Lindberg officiating. Interment was in Swan Lake Lutheran Cemetery in Dassel.
Casket bearers were Andrew’s seven sons: Ellwood, Ronald, Stanley, Dennis, Gary, John and Norman.
The Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel handled the arrangements.
