James J. Haapala, age 89, of Cokato, died Monday, Aug. 23, 2010, at the Buffalo Hospital.
He was born June 2, 1921, in Hayti, SD.
Jim grew up in Cokato.
He served in the US Army Air Corp from September 1942 thru November 1945.
Jim married Mildred Evers in 1947, and after a few years of residency in Cokato, moved his family to a farm north of town.
He farmed from 1952 to 1969, before moving back close to Cokato, and working at Dura Supreme in Howard Lake until his retirement in 1983.
Jim was a lifetime member of the America Legion, for over 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Julia Haapala.
Jim is survived by his wife, Mildred (Millie); daughter Jean Zander; son Bob Haapala and wife Bonnie; grandchildren Michelle Harris and husband Terry, and Breanne Haapala; and great-grandchildren Calleigh and Brooke Harris.
The funeral service was Saturday, Aug. 28 at 11 a.m. North Crow River Lutheran Church, north of Cokato. Interment followed at Our Saviors Lutheran Cemetery of French Lake.
Visitation was Friday, Aug. 27 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Cokato, and continued Saturday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
